After about a year of trying to decide on a close quarters optic for my 16" Armalite flat top, I ordered a Holosight from Bushmaster. (552 AA battery model)

I finally got it to the range on Sunday and was very impressed. I zeroed my rifle for 50 yards. The sight in took no time at all. The brightness adjustments worked excellent (it was a very bright day).

The 1 moa dot was a plus as far as precision goes. I noticed most red dot optics use a 4 moa or larger dot. I was able to make hits on the 6" and 10" steel gongs at 300yds. The finer dot didn't completely obscure the target.

Field of view is also excellent. I know shooting with both eyes open is the usual method with this type of optic, but at the longer ranges I was still closing one eye. Habit I guess.

All I can say is I am very happy with my Eotech!

Congrats! I was hoping to pickup the same sight for my Bushy Carbine, but I opted for a locally availible ATN Ultra Sight. I thnk I'd still rather have a holosight, but at $150 I'll be happy for now. (I had to replace the scope that migrated to my L1A1 quickly. :p)

It costed about $400.00 with shipping and handling. I could've gone cheaper, but I'm a geek and I wanted the law enforcement/military model with the protective shroud. :cool: The other optics I was considering were the Leupold CQ/T (7 - $800), Trijicon Relflex, and Aimpoint. The Eotech was in the price range I wanted to spend. The Leupold is pretty neat, but it's kinda heavy in weight and cost.
 
Optically is the 552 different than the non-AA models or is it just for logistical reasons (AA batteries can be found anywhere)?

I been thinking about this if I don't like the way the Trijicon Tripower turns out.

Optically, the 552 is the same as the "N" battery models. The other difference is the overall length due to the larger battery compartment on the AA model.

I chose the AA model because they are alot easier to find, cost and longer battery life. Somewhere around 300 hours of constant use with alkalines and 600-700 hours with AA lithium batteries.

I believe the N battery models only last about 70 hours of constant use.

As meathammer pointed out, optically there is no difference between the 552 and the N-cell models. However, it may help some individuals here that there are AA-cell models other than the 552.

For example, the Eotech 512.A65 uses AA batteries and has the ruggedized hood for protection, yet only costs around $330. The difference is that you don't get the extras applicable to the 55x series (military spec). The 55x series is submersible 33 ft., features redesigned membrane switches to provide further separation between switches and reduce audio signature. In addition, the 55x series is compatible with NVDs.

If you don't need the above extras, then you can get the 512 and save yourself ~$50.

Those looked pretty good. I had narrowed it down to that and my aimpoint but ended up going with teh aimpoint. Glad you like the one you went with. :)
 
Regarding the 510 series, since I don't plan on swimming thirty feet down, are they ok in rain? Also, it appears the 512 with the AA batteries is only available with the 2D reticle---?
 
Good question. My first generation HOLOsight has been used in the rain without any problems whatsoever. But that's not an EOTech model, it's the old Bushnell one. I still haven't upgraded to the EOTech :( so don't have any info for ya.

Guess I should have gone to the EOTech website before posting. . .Duho!

Their specs say the 510 series are good for 10' immerssion, so I guess rain's no problem.

Now, how to stash away $400. . . .mmmm.

Yes, but is it the same thing, just with a fancy reticle, or are they optically different? what is it like to use one compared to a red dot? Do they shoot the same?
 
I have both, I got the Aimpoint M2 first with the 522 a year later for a 2nd AR. Both are good sights IMO. I highly recommend that if you get a chance to look at both, you do.

Batterylife-- alot longer!!
easy to carry a 2nd battery with you
easy to mount, but need an additional part to do so (rings)
smaller field of view, due to a longer tube
single dot aimming point

Eeotech
shorter battery life, but easier to find replacements
easy to mount, no extras needed
wider field of view
dot in center with a circle around it, this can be confusing, but it depends on the person

ACOG is a whole other ballpark, but I have one of those too and love it more than the other two.

Part of the decision in talking to people at the range is how well they are able to shoot with both eyes open, those that have a harder time doing that, seem to prefer the aimpoint. I am faster with the Eotech in my shooting, the dot in circle doesn't confuse me. At close range, I just put the circle on the target, farther out, I'll put the little dot where I want it.

I highly reccomend you do a search of the AR15.com section on optics for the AR-15 rifle, there is a ton of info there and photos to boot.

MeatHammer, congrats on the EOTech. I am a Trijicon, Aimpoint and EOTech dealer and believe the EOTech is the best bang for the buck. I am sorry to hear you paid so much for it! I sell the 552 for $60.00 below what you paid. E-mail me for prices, I can SAVE YOU A LOT OF MONEY!

Thanks G&R. I did quite a bit of research to decide on which optic I wanted. What I didn't do was shop around much. I have a few shooting buddies who may be interested in an EOTech or other optic. I'll be sure to check your prices next time.
 
I had the cash all saved up to buy the Eotech 552 but then I saw that pretty little Smith and Wesson 642 and that was that. My girlfriend was pleased with the purchase but my Bushmaster was very disappointed. I guess its back to slipping 20's into the back of the gun safe every week. :D :rolleyes:
