Residents of the Arizona town that has become a YouTube sensation after police forcibly removed a woman speaking at a recent public meeting are now experiencing firearms confiscation by the government.

Cliffs:
Quartzite, Arizona has recently been the battleground between its residents and the local government. Citizens are being ejected out of town hall meetings and almost the entire police force has been fired for accusing the chief of police of misconduct.

Just recently, one of the "vocal" residents, Michael Roth, has had his firearms seized and ordered not to approach city buildings without calling ahead as a warning. The order was given by Justice of the Peace Karen Slaughter on behalf of council man Joe Winslow. Winslow claimed Roth glared at him and called him a "turd". Furthermore, Winslow tried to get a restraining order, because Winslow has PTSD and does not want to be held responsible for his own violent actions if provoked by Roth.

PS. Is this the appropriate way to quote articles now?

Yep, perfectly done. -- Derek

That is insanity. If you live in Arizona I would suggest going to the internal affairs department. I know they have a general bad rep in all police departments, but they do serve a purpose and if the chief of police is going outside of the law they are the ones that can do something about it. PS also if anyone down there is an NRA member they would be willing to help said individual.

It's getting real ugly there in Quartzite and there are a lot of ignorant people on bith sides of the fence and very little common sense to be had. What it will take to restore order I ain't got a clue but if Governor Brewer steps in it could get nasty.

" This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing Government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it." From Abraham Lincoln's 1st inaugural address

someone needs to step in...a Federal judge perhaps.

Sounds like Arizona is sprouting some more Wyatt Earps...making the laws up as they go along.

This is insane, a Justice of the Peace, with no formal training or legal background other than that she won an election, and was once a Deputy, Issues a court order to surrender personal property without a formal hearing, without a medical or mental evaluation, without anything other than the whims of a city council member....

What part of the 4th amendment does she not understand? What part of Due Process does she not get? This guy seriously needs to lawyer up and go head hunting...

The supreme court has ruled long ago that Police Officers and Public Servants have to put up with name calling, that because of their public status, and that it is a basic right of the 1st amendment, "To redress the Government of ones grievances" that they may NOT be offended by language alone... they gave up the right to be offended when they took the oath of office...

This is an obvious trampling of civil liberties. I have little doubt a competent court will overturn her injunction.

I must say though, the defendant did himself no favors by not showing up. This may have turned out much differently.

There's authority, and then, there's little people. In 12 states, a cop and a citizen can both record the same conversation, and one of them is committing a felony. Guess which one.

Small town pissing contests sometimes go over the top.

They can be similar to academic arguments.

The less important the issue the harder academics will fight over it.

It's crazy that Winslow kept claiming that Roth shouldn't have a firearm because of his views.

Translation = if you don't agree with your government you shouldn't be armed.

Whats really scary is that this behavior seems to have gone on long enough that these councilmen and JOP feel they can do as they please. Deeply disturbing.

Happens all the time in divorce cases. Never gone through it myself, but it does happen a lot.

I know what they would do in Kentucky or Tennessee. They don't like government much down there.

They haven't liked the revenuers for a very very long time now. Feds are best not to wander around the sticks alone, they might get permanently "lost", courtesy of local residents...
