Even the police don't feel they can wait for the police

This article from Fox News talks about police in an Iowa city buying their own AR-15s to keep in their cruisers while on duty. I loved one of the quotes from the officers.

This is from their chief of police Harry Daugherty when talking about the need for AR-15s in a potentialy dangerous situation

“We can’t wait for SWAT to get there,”

Even the police are realizing that in an bad situation there isn't time to wait for the police to show up and save the day.

Exactly.

Where I live, I could pick up a couple of my "Shootin' Irons", walk out my front door, down two houses, across the street, cut through a back yard, and be at the elementary school in less that 90 seconds, walking very slowly.

Not that I would do that, but I can certainly get there faster that the police. ABSOLUTELY NOT a knock on the local PD, {they ARE the Good Guys here} just the way it is.

I guess the article does show that police can be outgunned and ARs help level the playing field. However, this has been done many times in this state and it's never made national news. My last department had a couple guys buy their own rifles through the city. The thing with Marion that irked me was that when the officer leaves the dept. the city will buy the gun back. If I buy a rifle out of my paycheck, I'm keeping it. I'm sure the city just doesn't want to have to pay $50,000 and be stuck with the bill.

This is not exactly hot news....LEO all over the country have had long guns for a long time. The issue is not whether the average citizen NEEDS a gun or should have a certain type of gun. It is none of their business what you NEED. What you need and what you just WANT is your decision to make.
You buy whatever car you want as long as you are qualified to drive it and can afford it. Rank and file officers will usually be the first to remind you that LE cannot always..or even often..protect you from an existential threat...also not hot news(retired LAPD)

I can think of a good reason to have an AR-15 at home, and I almost needed one; multiple armed intruders. Wife opened door after ring, sweaty woman said she worked for a carpet cleaning company and they were doing a market survey. Would clean our carpets for free, crew in van. Wife said we had them done already, slammed door.

Had my sidearm ready for what seemed like ages. Rusty van left, could see no occupants for the tint, saw a bashed license tag I couldn't make-out.

We had a long conversation about not answering door when doorbell rings, unless we know who it is. Putting intercom in as soon as I can, and a peep in the door.

Feinstein et al who think civilians don't need ARs are sorely mistaken, deluded, and misguided. The safety of my family comes before anything Feinstein wants.

Not putting someone who is at the door on notice that someone is home is a big mistake. There is no need to open the door but a stern notice that someone is there is very savy. Daytime burglars will knock and if they think no one is home they will force entry and burglary is mainly a daytime crime unless your home looks vacant at night. If you don't like the advice..my apology;)

I live in marion.

I watched two of these officers pull into a parking lot near my house and proceed to follow a racoon then beat it with an asp , his partner went into the trunk and grabbed a shotgun and without looking to see if he had a proper backstop or if there were even any body around (I was directly across the street at a gas station)
Put 2 shots of what I assume is buckshot into the racoon.

This all took place on the sidewalk in broad daylight.

For those that know the area, it was in the parking lot of the Living Water Center which is a strip mall where Cedar valley Outfitters is located. Corner of Grand ave and Eastpost Road

For civilians: When seconds count, police are only minutes away...

For patrolmen: When seconds count, SWAT are only minutes away...

I see no difference -- both deserve to be armed and armed the same.

I live in Nashville, Tn. and very recently the local police were given the OK to carry AR rifles if the officer bought it.

If the police need an AR...I do too. We face the same bad guy. Its just likely that he will more often than I.

Hell, there's an elementary school right across the street looking out my back patio door. I could be in a better shooting position than most responding LEO's within seconds, especially if I went to the guest room upstairs. Of course, all I could cover is the front door and parking lot......
