Everyone should have
  • strength of character
  • force of will
  • and the determination to overcome adversity

Sadly, those values vary, even as our human dimensions vary.

Some of us probably ought to have a side arm.
Some of us probably ought to have a b/u side arm.
Some of us probably ought to have a center-fire rifle.
Some of us probably ought to have a nice carbine.
Some of us probably ought to have a shotgun.
Some of us probably ought to have a BP weapon.

Tastes, like mileage, may vary.

- a trusty handgun
- a trusty shotgun
- a trusty .22 rifle
- a trusty .270+ cal rifle
- a trusty "assault weapon"
- a billion rounds of ammo for each
I must respectfully disagree...

It should be a trillion rounds of ammo for each gun. A billion is such a small number - we deal with trillions now.

Minimum Battery:

22 rifle
12ga Double barrel/pump
38/357 revolver
9mm quality semi auto
30-30 rifle.

Lessons on how to use and deploy these weapons properly. You can hunt and fight just fine with this group.

IF you think you are a Mall ninja a EBR will be necessary too.

If you think you need more caliber, better look at the problem a lot harder, get better training and quality practice. Then look again.

Any quality weapon in any of these classes will work just fine. The rest is simply a matter of environment and/or subjective prejudices. Not better not worse, just subjective and situational.

Some very few places a 308 or 30-06 might be a better choice to do what the 30-30 will and has done effectively for over 100 years.

On the other hand if this becomes your hobby, God help you. Most of us with the disease have 50 to several hundred rifles, shotguns, and handguns. They have turned into fairly good investments. Watch what happens when they try to ban them, and when their value will sky rocket when the super inflation related to the uncontrolled spending of the recent congress hits us. And it will. The laws of economics are immutable.

As the economic situation worsens, and it will, we may need our firearms like never before. At least have your minimum battery.

That's it.

Good luck.

Fred

Anyone who's not a convicte felon or seriously mentally ill, and could use the firearm if they had to, should have a CCW permit.

22lr: a pistol and rifle
Shotgun: one long barrel and one short barrel with chokes
Handgun: one centerfire for home and carry, one for deep concealment
Rifle: one scoped bolt action, another semi-automatic Home Defense Rifle

... a .22 caliber handgun and a .22 caliber rifle. I'd recommend the Ruger Bearcat and the Ruger 10/22, although there are many ways that you could go. It's tough the beat the Ruger quality, however.

Don't forget a weapon that you can conceal, of course, because a Ruger Bearcat is not going to do that job.

enough money to have it all

and the will to train to use what they have effectively

22lr hand gun squirrel accurate out to 75 feet [single-six or m41]
22lr rifle theat you can bench a dime group and freehand a apple at 100 yards [CZ 452 super brno]
357/40/45 handgun that you can freehand 2" at 25 yards and hit 12" at 100yards. [kimber gold match or S&W 66]
223/6.5/30 something that you can bench 4" and freehand 12" at 300 yards [H-Bar or m96 or rem 700]

can we add to this thread a post-your-targets?

Everyone should have a black powder weapon of some sort. Not only are they insanely fun, they are just as useful/lethal as they were 150+ years ago, but you can feel the Brady Campaign crying when you get one shipped to your house without a background check

Any armament available to the infantry.

This being neccesary to fulfill the obligation of the second amendment.

A copy of the Constitution next to his/her Bible, Koran, Talmud, Book of Shadows, Quotations of Chairman Mao, Machinery's Handbook....

. . . working forebrain, a sense of decency and honor, and some patience.

I haven't met "everyone," but I know that some of the ones I have met could certainly not be trusted with any of the toys listed above. Some of the ones I've seen on TV could not be trusted off of a dog leash.

A least a single weapon that they can use effectively against 1 on 1 with a soldier (of any country). The 2nd isn't about duck hunting y'all. A S&W model 10 can work just as well as a automatic M-4 if you can use it effectively. Just be good with it.

Also the ability to be self sufficient for at least 72 hours.
