I would have to say....

a 22, I agree
a deer rifle, agreed
a shotgun(either 20 or 12, or hey, 16 if you got some money for ammo)

I would add to this, Pellet gun (high powered break action capable of taking small game easily and good for teaching the kids)

Reloading press, with dies and supplies for all guns in the arsenal, plenty of powder, and swaging tools for pellets (infinitely reusable).

LOTS of ammunition and cleaning supplies.

I'll leave the other stuff out, bows, knives, survival gear, etc. etc. etc. That's just digging too deep.

I can't really say that EVERYONE needs a handgun though. Most of the people I see at the range can barely hit paper at 30 ft with one, regardless of how nice it is, because unlike a rifle it takes more than 10 rounds to get used to it ;)

A Ruger 10/22- traded away
1911 45 acp- never owned
Marlin Lever Action 30/30- still own
Mossberg 500 12 ga- would NEVER own
S&W Model 29 44 mag- might own if cheap

I'm going to go a little more broad, in the interest of 'whatever floats yer boat'.

A Marlin or Ruger .22 rifle.
An old military bolt-action.
A snub-nosed revolver.
and a pump-action shotgun.

And probably something of Russian design, though that can cross over.

Anything else is creamy, delicious icing. And what's a cake without that?

Worst list I've read on this forum and that is saying something. The only thing on it I own or would own is the Mossberg and you had a 50/50 chance on that one. No carry gun, no evil black rifle. Are you aware its a new century? Your list seems to be from the 70s or 80s.

Original List

A Ruger 10/22
1911 45 acp
Marlin Lever Action 30/30
Mossberg 500 12 ga
S&W Model 29 44 mag

Ouch! Maybe the list should have been

Glock 21 45 acp
Saiga 12 with MD 20 Drum
Saiga AK 47
Marlin XL7 30-06
S&W 500
SW M&P 15-22

Ok, maybe I was a little harsh but really, I think the newest gun on that list came out in 1964. Nor do I think everyone has to have a .44. I can't even think why most people would want a .44 or a lever action unless they were hunters. Does anyone think the list would be out of place in Field & Stream in 1969?

I agree and disagree, i think you are overly specific but mentions roles that should be filled, for example, I have a .22 rifle, but it is a savage not a ruger, my revolver is a model 66 .357 not a .44, and my pistol is a 9mm, all fill the same role but they need not be exactly as you had said.

Nice list

I was going to suggest a SA revolver, but
IN THE SPIRIT of the OP, I will add

Ruger Single Six Convertible

Well it just goes to show that the classics still remain at the top. Tried and true with most of the bugs worked out. I guess I show my age of 50 in the choices. Could you or anyone post the modern day equivelant?...Russ

Everyone Should Own

A Ruger 10/22
1911 45 acp
Marlin Lever Action 30/30
Mossberg 500 12 ga
S&W Model 29 44 mag

What if you don't like the guns on that list? =p

I believe that every one should have at least one (1) gun. It's your right and your duty to protect/feed yourself and your family. Everything else is based on one's opinion.

Ruger 77/22
1911 Match grade 45
Sharps Mid range rifle
Browning overunder
Smith 41
I'm OK with the model 29

I upgraded the list a little......

Thanx, the other Russ.

here is my take on it tailored to fit my personal preferences;

Small cal bolt action rifle for varmint fun - my choice in 22-250

30 cal bolt action for midsized game up to elk - haven't decide on mine yet, maybe 300rum, have a 338 should do for now.

large cal rifle for BIG game - mines a 450 marlin lever action

Good 20 0r 12 guage shot gun - mines a 12g semi auto probably ought to get 2, short pump for hd, and one for hunting

double action revolver - mines a gp100

single action revolver - mines an awa colt copy 45colt

good sized cal semi auto pistol - mine will be a 1911 colt gold cup 45acp

Semi auto combat rifle - mines an sks.

as said before; 22's like your other "must have shooters" - mine are colt target model pistol, and a 10/22. need more.....

Something ridiculous, yet you love it - mines a 500 magnum. If I ever get to hunt with it it wont be so ridiculous.

as many other cool guns as you want/can afford/ can find.

It's all subjective, but I think I'd expand your list as follows:

A Ruger 10/22 or other reliable .22 semiauto (a .22LR AR or upper is on my "someday list")

1911 45 acp or other reliable defensive-caliber pistol (I think 1911's are neat but I own a S&W 3913LS; a Glock 17 or Springfield XD/XDM 9mm is near the top of my "want" list)

Marlin Lever Action 30/30 or other reliable intermediate-caliber rifle (I'm in the AK/AR camp here, which often fill similar roles)

Mossberg 500 12 ga or other all-purpose shotgun (I don't own a shotgun, though I would undoubtedly enjoy playing with one; maybe someday...

S&W Model 29 44 mag (This is firmly in the "very cool toy" class for me; I think if I were going to buy a revolver, it'd be a S&W 686 or somesuch in .357, though. I shot one once and liked it.)

.22LR pistol or revolver (I am hoping Kel-Tec makes a .22LR variant of the PMR-30---if they do, I will try my darndest to afford one---but I may pick up a .22LR revolver in the next couple of years for my daughter also.)

The only thing every individual needs to uphold his duty to defend liberty is:

1. A battle rifle
2. Ammo for said battle rifle
3. The ability to repeatably shoot at least 4 MOA from field positions with said battle rifle and ammo

Those are the only true "must haves," in my opinion. From there, it's all just personal preference and what the needs of your individual situation dictate.

The battle rifle could be anything capable of that level of accuracy... preferably one that is capable of maintaining it to at least 500 yards. The action of the rifle does not matter, as long as it allows the shooter to fire a shot every 3-5 seconds.

The hardware isn't nearly as important as the software. Almost any servicable military-pattern center fire rifle with surplus ammo will shoot to that standard. The question is, can you?

If you want to find out, come to an Appleseed and see how you stack up on the Army Qualification Test. www.appleseedinfo.org

What everyone should own is on an individual basis. I can handle a .50 Beowulf quite effectively, but I doubt a 4' 9" woman under 100 pounds can operate the same weapon as effectively as I.

Now, in regard to the hardware that I've used, these prove to be quite effective depending on the situation:

.50 Beowulf
DPMS Lo-Pro
Surefire G2 and G3 lights (G2 LED)

Ammunition for the .50 Beo is the 334 gr and 325 gr HP
Ammunition for the Lo-Pro consists of XM193, M855, tracer rounds, and incendiary rounds

Why the Beowulf? After you take out the bad guys, you can take out their vehicle too! Or,to save on hard-to-find ammo: take out both in one shot! :)

You should add a Glock in 9mm to that list. Everyone should own a Glock in 9mm :)

Why should anyone care what I own? After almost 50 years of shooting and owning fire arms, I'll make my own decisions on what I need and what works for me, thank you.
