OK, what are the guns you think EVERYONE should own? I can start:

1911. THE handgun all others are measured against.
Ruger 10/22. Most popular .22 semi-auto
Rem 870. Most popular pump 12 ga.
Mosin variant. For $60, why not?

OK, those are a few my choices. Anything goes.

.357 revolver, at least 4" bbl
9mm semiauto pistol
.22 semiauto pistol
.30 cal rifle, either bolt or semi

Okay, I'll play...

Marlin 39A lever .22 - the most "fun" possible out of a .22 rifle
Smith & Wesson 4" N-frame in either .357 or .44 magnum
1911-A1 - never ending possibilities to make it uniquely yours
Colt SAA .44-Special or .45 Long Colt - The Legend continues
Sako Rifle in 30-06 or .270 - Good all over this continent for anything
Remington 870 12-guage - superbly reliable and accurate and affordable

How'd I do?

Anything belt fed that goes fast. Then again, anything box fed that goes fast. :)

1911
S&W .44 mag double action revolver
AR15
Ruger 10/22
Remington 700 or Winchester Model 70 in 30-06
Remington 870 in 12 gauge

You can handle 99% of all possible situations with that list. They are also all easy to find ammo for and have been proven by time.

.30 caliber bolt action rifle (.308, .30-06)
.22 lever action or semi-auto rifle
12-gauge pump shotgun (w/selection of chokes and slug barrel)

.45 SA pistol (1911A1, 4 or 5 inch barrel)
.357 DA revolver (4 or 6 inch barrel)
.22 semi-auto pistol (Ruger or Browning)

These would be my minimum requirements. A bonus, for more serious work, would be a semi-auto rifle in .223 or .308 (AR, AK or Mini-14) and a large bore revolver (.44 mag)

I have to keep my firearms to a bare minimum, so I've put some thought into this question let me tell you. Here's my short list:

CZ 452 trainer w/ tangent sights. Mine has brought down many ptarmigan, grouse, hare, squirrel , muskrat, and in one case a very small field mouse. Accuracy is downright amazing, and it's as tough and reliable as the Mauser it's patterned on. Forget the scope. You really do not need it with this beauty.

Mossberg 500 12 ga. IMHO better than the competition because of its toughness and the superior tang safety. I used mine all summer as my bear gun along the Sustitna drainage. By the end of the salmon runs it was filled with mud and sand, but it still cycled and functioned.

A nice .357 medium-frame revolver. I'd include the GP-100's, the Security Six line, and of course the classic Model 13 Smiths and Trooper line of Colts. These old police revolvers can be had for half the price of a comparable quality semi.

I agree - Old Dog has a pretty good list.

I'd say for affordability and popularity some specifics might be:

.30 caliber bolt action rifle (.308, .30-06)[Rem 700]
.22 lever action or semi-auto rifle [Ruger 10-22]
12-gauge pump shotgun [870]

.45 SA pistol [1911A1 COLT]
.357 DA revolver [Ruger Security 6 or GP100]
.22 semi-auto pistol [Ruger MKII]

Hmmmm. I just noticed these are American companies - another advantage.

The typical survival/hunting/basic battery.
1 pistol..................have CZ75 PO1. great pistol - better than any I tried.
1 revolver 357 cal preferably..............don't have one yet....
1 rifle hunting.........Mosin 91/30
1 rifle defense.........Mosin M38 - use what ya got!
1 shotgun hunting.....Winchester 1200
1 shotgun defense.....same.
1 22 rifle..................don't have one yet.
I need more money to buy better stuff, like an AK for the wife, and an FAL for me, and a nice Smith mod 66...... Oh, and another Ruger 10/22!

Outside of a .22LR rifle for teaching others to shoot, I'm not sure that there's a gun EVERYONE should own.

I couldn't shoot a 1911 for years because my hands were too small.
I couldn't shoot a rifle because I didn't have anywhere to shoot it.
A DA revolver's trigger was too hard for me to pull back and shoot accurately.
I couldn't shoot a shotgun because there was nowhere for me to shoot it.
I settled on a Glock, and I'm sure plenty of people wouldn't want to own a Glock.

Now I own many different varieties of weapons, but I don't think there's much that's for everyone. That's the beautiful thing about the many guns types out there, there's something for everyone, but not one for everyone.

...Should own, or must own?... I'm satisfied with two, although a I have more:

.357, 4" 7shot Revolver with a few ready-to-roll moonclips, and a 12 Ga. Shotgun... good home defense combination. :D

I don't want to get into specifics, so I'll just stick with types of guns that everyone should own.

.30 cal bolt gun
.30 cal or .223 semi auto
12ga pump
.22 semi auto long gun

9mm semi auto
powerful revolver (.357/.44)

This gives a weapon for every scenario that I can think of except for being greatly outnumbered, in which case you should be with friends that have comparable collections :D

.45 SA (1911)
9mm double stack full size (Beretta 92, SIG 226, etc.)
S&W revolver either .357 or .44 mag.
.30 caliber bolt action
12 guage pump (Mossberg)
Evil Black Rifle in .223 or .308
Evil wood stock Rifle in 7.62x39
.22LR pistol
.22LR rifle
a concealable gun in at least 9mm.

.45 caliber 1911
9m/m Browning Hi-Power
DA/SA semi-auto
.50 caliber Hawken
Remington 700 BDL .25-06
Smith & Wesson .44 magnum
Smith & Wesson .357 magnum
Smith & Wesson J-frame .38 Special
Colt Detective Special, Cobra, or Agent
Colt Python
Smith & Wesson models 18 and 39
Ruger Security-Six

and

Oh! yes, a Bersa Thunder Duotone .380 ACP.

Best Wishes,

Cool, Thanks for the shooping list for the next few years :p

Couple of them in there I would have never thought of. CZ seems to be pretty popular, as is a revolver and lever gun.

Believe it or not I'll vote for anything that's a single shot. Nothing teaches marksmenship like knowing that this shot has to count.
