One of my in-laws was just at my house and I told him I was taking a CCW class. He was very rude and said no one had any business carrying a concealed weapon.

He also said "If you shoot someone you'll go to jail, even if they pull a gun on you".

I pointed out that he was mistaken but he was very rude and claimed that I didn't know what I was talking about.

Can you guys post some documented examples I can show him? Even though he is ignorant of the law, for some reason he is convinced that anyone who uses a gun in self-defense would go to jail, no matter what (unless they are a cop).

I mean, they'd probably take you in for questioning with your lawyer for a few hours. If the DA was a jerk, they'd probably try to charge you. Whether they can convict you is a whole different matter. The anti's make no sense to me whatsoever.

What kind of society would we live in if we can't defend ourselves?

If there were laws against defending ourselves, I think a lot of us would be criminals because it's so much easier.

Suggestion: the less people know about your carrying a firearm, the better. It is called a CCW for a reason.

Your friends, relatives, employer, host, etc. should not know that you are carrying.

Hey man...you should have just asked him "Even if that were true would you rather be alive and temporarily in jail or dead and buried in the ground?"

Truth is that in some places you WILL go to jail, even if you don't end up ultimately going to court. Some places nothing at all will happen and a lot of it also depends on the circumstances and the political climate of the region in which the shooting occurs.

I have an LEO friend who works in Plano, a big city just north of Dallas. This is how his dept. handles "justified" shootings:

Around North Dallas..it's pretty much the norm that even persons involved in "justified" shootings will still be filed on as it was a homicide. THEN....the person goes before the Grand Jury to get either "NO BILLED" or "TRUE BILLED".

Even Officers who are involved shootings are filed on and named as suspects in the taking of life however once the facts are presented it's normally "NO BILLED".

It's just a formality/way of passing the buck to the Grand Jury. It's pretty standard around here.

Then I asked him "Do you arrest the person who was justified even if it looks like a clearcut case of a justified shooting?"

and he said:

I can't see someone, who the Police can tell was justified, being arrested. Most of the time the person would go to jail because very few occurances are justified. But if it's a clean shoot they're not physically going to jail however they will be, what we call, "Filed On" meaning they will have charges prepared against them for the offense and it will be sent to the DA's office for review. Like I said, this is what happens even to Law Enforcement Officials. Basically a technical way to say, "Hold on, we're gonna keep you in one spot and do our investigation...but we're not gonna rule anything out to soon so if something develops and you actually did something wrong..well we've already got you listed as the suspect. If it comes back and you're clear..well that's good too."

i posted a news snippet the other day about a woman up here who shot an intruder three times. she has not been arrested.

two years ago there was a pastor here in alaska (threads still going on about it now, re: civil suit from victims family) who shot two intruders, he was not arrested but charges were brought against him, and subsequently found 'not guilty'.

mind you hellbore, i have tried arguing the same points. but the liberal i was discussing this with dismissed every instance i brought up as being 'anectdotal', and not part of the 'big picture'. in other words, if it isnt provided by a source the liberal accepts as gospel, its worthless in their eyes.

Well, it doesn't help that he doesn't believe any information I get from this message board... He thinks all you people are liars telling stories online, and a bunch of red-necked dummies. He has this idea that any "gun person" is a simpleton. I think it would be interesting to get together a bunch of THR members and see just how many are intelligent, educated people. Besides that, who says only "educated" people who got their sheepskin are allowed to know anything? He has a rather elitist point of view, despite his own poverty-level lifestyle.

Also he gave me a cheap insult as he walked away from the argument: "Like I'm going to believe someone who hasn't even been to college". Well, I have been in college for the last few years, I just haven't graduated yet. My degree in Computer Systems Engineering is not exactly easy, since I have to work to pay my way while I go to school. It's funny that he places so much importance in his own degree... He got a degree in History, and he works as a rock broker selling gravel and rock for landscaping. It's a job someone who didn't even go to high school could do, I'd wager. He got the job because his friend runs the place. I can't think of anything he knows how to do that I can't do better (except being a rock broker, I guess I don't know much about that). I wonder what college classes he thinks will teach you about gun laws? Unless you are talking about law school, I don't see the point of his insult. I think he was just angry because he knew he was full of BS.

"There are none so blind, as those who will not see''.

I would imagine some of his ''bluster'' and the insult aspect is because he maybe does know he is full of ''stuff''. Sometimes it feels as tho one is engaged in one of the seemingly endless sequences of questions from kids ... ''But why'' ......... ''but why'' ......... ad infinitum!

As for the ''education aspect'' .... shucks, that is lame.! And ''simpleton'' - haha - he should go look in a mirror - plus checking up on narcisism. :p

If he wants to correspond with a pro-gun liberal who is grotesquely overeducated and still thinks he is an idiot, have him email me. He better understand statistics and law, however, because otherwise he really is just spouting off, and there is no point in talking to someone like that.

I must say, you're not painting a very pretty picture of this individual.

Arrogant, close-minded, and deliberately ignorant are all terms that one might apply to him.

In which case it's not even worth trying to have a discussion with him.

Uh, do you have to be around this guy? Is he just over at your house because he was in the neighborhood or was he invited over? He sounds like a real you-know-what.

You're probably wasting your time trying to convince him he's wrong.

Personally, I wouldn't take such an attitude in my home. If someone like that were at my place treating me with such contempt, they'd either cut it out and exhibit some respect and politeness or be shown the door without any future welcome.

I would not waste one minute talking to him. He has made up his mind.

I would ask him to leave my house and not return until he learns some manners.

What Guns?"
CCW?

I have "immediate" family [ read we were raised in the same house, and have same last name...that is about it tho'...] That have no idea If I have guns, have a CCW permit or two,.... One or two "might suspect" - one did find out for sure back during the fall...

I can play dumb , and be really low profile. I have even had folks ask If I wanted to learn to shoot...

What guns? ;)

Check out this Article With Statistics .The NRA has a full page of specific examples in each month's magazine under the title "Armed Citizen". I would say that they have at least 5 items a month.

According to This Article your father in law would be statisticly more likely to commit a crime than CCW holder.

Present him a couple of statistics with solid references... Data beats no data every time.

Well I can't very well avoid this fellow completely. He is my sister's husband, he's family.

He emailed me later apologizing for his rudeness. It should be no surprise, considering he has some paintball equipment he just borrowed from me right before our argument, his computer is one I built for him out of parts to help him save money (and I fix it for him when it has problems), his wife is driving a car I have fixed several times, and he walks on his living room floor that I installed for him. That's just to name a few things I have done for him recently. I am constantly helping people in my family with technical issues or handyman projects.

I'm trying to be fair and think of things these two have done for me, but for the life of me, I can not think of a single time either of these two have helped me with anything or done anything for me.

I actually am beginning to question whether I should continue to be so helpful. I have two liberal brothers-in-law, both financially unstable, who I am always helping fix cars, computers, electronic devices, home improvement projects, etc. Both of them are lousy handymen and have no skill at fixing things. Niether of them can handle camping or being in the outdoors (I have tried to introduce them to this world but they don't like it). Neither of them likes to handle the dirty work of being a man. Both of them take a holier-than-thou attitude when it comes to guns. Both are liberal and criticize my conservative beliefs.

These men aren't much of men in my book. I'm tired of always helping these pansy-assed limp-wristed metro men who can't even take care of their duties as husbands and fathers without my constant help and guidance. We live in an era where "real men" are getting more scarce, and the ones that are still holding down the fort are labelled rednecks and ignoramuses. God only knows why I continue to help these two. I love my family dearly and I don't like to see my sisters endure any kind of hardship that I can help avert, but these two guys are really testing my patience.
