Expander Dies for Necked Brass?

I see pics like that with .22 Hornet, but have never managed to do it, but maybe I have just been real careful with .22 Hornet because of that, and I am only using the standard expander. I have been meaning to get a Sinclair or 21st Century expander to compliment my Redding bushing style sizer though. Maybe I finally will after this thread.

So the RCBS expander die is not intended to flare the mouth of the case?
This says it flares the case neck?
Re-read what I posted. I said it would flare if pushed in far enough. However, there is a cylindrical portion before the flaring portion that if only pushed in that far will only end up expanding the case neck.

Yes it is hard to see....especially blued ones.;)

This is a closeup of the .223 expander in the video above.....does not flare at all....doesn't need to, even so hard to see as this, it works perfectly.

Actually, GW, if my eyes don't deceive me, there is a taper portion to that expander right at the top. You might throw a mic on it and see for sure.

This is why I think an expander (flaring) die would be a good thing …

Like I said... I've done that with .30-30 brass, too.

A properly sized stepped expander will fix that, although a universal flare die would... sort of. I think the flare die would overwork the case mouth.

I went ahead and ordered the RCBS expander die. Should work.

I think the simplest solution is to get a Lee universal flair die and use the NOE inserts.
It’s a very good system. It’s nice to just have the one die and be able to change the insert to whatever cartridge your currently loading. At $7.50 each they are much cheaper than buying an m-die for each cartridge.
