I picked up a Rock Island 1911 over the weekend. I wanted to introduce myself to the 1911 world and thought, for $420, why not. Who makes good extra mags and where can I get them? Thanks!

Act or Novaks probably came with the gun. I recently pick some Checkmate and Metalform mags. Both brands have ran smooth, but have not seen a lot of use. I am sure that there are others out there that work without problems.

Seems like your higher dollar mags are worth the extra money over the lifetime of shooting.

all i can say is avoid buying the 10-round wilson combat mags, the one i got would routinely cause a jam especially the last round. never had any problems with the standard 8-round mags

I've had good luck with Chip McCormick mags. The 8, 7 and even the 10 round mags have worked fine for me.

The Wilson's are supposed to be the best. I have several and they have been perfect, but the McCormicks I've owned have never let me down either and they are about 50% less expensive.

The McCormick "shooting star" magazines have been flawless and are relatively inexpensive.

I used nighthawk custom one's in the 1911 I had and they worked great and were pretty cheap from Brownell's.

I've had good luck with Act mags but they weren't being used in a RIA 1911.

I use the five Chip McCormick 8-round mags that I bought for my Kimber for my RIA. They all work perfectly.

I use only old USGI or Colt made mags for my ARMSCOR 1911 -

they are 1911 pistols an dany mag will work in them, but I have never had any failures with the old mags, so that's my preference. It is a carry pistol and very reliable and accurate, long-lasting.

Check the 1911.org site for ARMSCOR/RIA pistols and you will find a lot of happy owners.
