FAL Optics/rail

So I have a FAL (Imbel receiver+STG58), and I want to put optics on it.

I will be purchasing the DSA scope mount w/ retention;

Any ideas for rings/mounting? (I want to mount to the dustcover.)

Any ideas for a scope? Are the Nikon 3x-9x any good or is Leupold? Is $250 or so enough to get a reasonable scope?

I also have the DSA scope mount, and here is the hands down lowest mounting you can get: TPS Tactical Rings ($65) and a Sightron S1 3-9x40 Mildot scope ($110). Extremely pleased with this setup, as it gives me a normal cheekweld on the stock and is pretty inexpensive.

Leupold VX-II scopes in excellent to as-new condition come up for sale on the boards with good regularity. Price is usually $170-$200. I got my last three that way. Its really all the scope you will ever need for a FAL (or any other 3 MOA gun for that matter).

I had a set of DSA low mount tac. rings on mine (about $65 also) and it mounted pretty low to the dust cover. As far as a scope for a FAL, I would personally go with a fixed 4-6 power but that's just my preference.

Does the objective bell extend behind the recoil shield of the receiver of your rifle?

Here is why I ask.

You let that scope hang very far off the back of the gun, and you're gonna get it in the face unless you only ever shoot it by hiding behind a benchrest.

One question, What would you ever use a 3-9x power scope on a FAL for? I have a FAL and did the same thing. After the initial fascination wore off I ended up shooting it open sight again. In hindsight I should have put a Leupold CQT or Trijicon ACOG on it instead. The main purpose of the rifle is for battle purposes, not long range sniping.

The main purpose of my FAL was to burn up battle packs of ammo until the price shot up.

Nowadays, its main purpose is to shoot at 1.5" dots on target backers at 200 yards.
I can hit the dot sometimes.

The QD rings allow me to slap an EOTECH (also with QD-attachment capability) on the rifle if I feel like going "hunting in thick brush."

Or I can shoot iron sights too if my eyes feel up to it.

I use a POSP variable power 2.5-5x24mm scope on mine. It works wonderfully, plus it wont break your bank AND it's an illuminated reticle.

It was perfect actually but I never really liked that Valdada scope that was on it anyway. It was a great quality scope but you had to shoulder it pretty tight because the eye relief was really short due to the rubber eyepiece on the end of it.

I use a POSP variable power 2.5-5x24mm scope on mine. It works wonderfully, plus it wont break your bank AND it's an illuminated reticle.

I'd stick to a lower power like this as well on a FAL. Mine was fixed X3 but I wish I could have cranked it to 5-6 or so once in awhile.

Hmmm. I initially had a 2.5X Weaver mounted on it, but couldn't find any battles to take it too. However, there's a gravel pit nearby with steel silhouettes at 350, 450, and 550 yards. I have the rifle zeroed in so that I can holdover using the mildots for LR use. Having a .308 and restricting yourself to close-in shots is like having a sports car and driving it at 30 mph. Just MHO.

I saw a kid (about 18 or so) get whacked REALLY hard by one two weeks ago. It was a Remmie 700 IIRC with a Nikon Monarch I think on it. He had been used to shoot ARs with iron sights so when his father handed him the rifle he scooted up real good to the bell, held his breath, and pulled the trigger.

The scope cut a real nice, almost complete circle right on his glabella (the big thick bony part between your eyes). He staggered back dazed and confused, clearly in pain. Profuse bleeding, laughing, and a lot of back slapping ensued.

Had a buddy over shooting a couple of months back and the husband of my wife's friend was there as well. He wanted to shoot and said he hadn't shot in quite awhile. We were shooting BP with 3 pellets of Triple 7 (150 gr, or so).

He popped his skull bad and blood went everywhere. We knew what happened right away because he wouldn't turn around and face us for a good 30 seconds or so. He reached up and touched his head before he turned around and all we saw was red fingers. His wife was PISSED.

Yeah, I like it without the eyepiece. Thanks, I just got it all the way together a couple weeks ago. I've been putting it together since I started ordering stuff in July. Some of the wait times on DSA stuff are pretty long, but worth it, imo.

Deer hunter, How has that scope held up? Does it hold up to the recoil of the FAL? Does the range finder work OK for the 308?

This look likes it would work well on my FAL.

It's held its zero easily. This scope is extremely rugged (It's military issue). The range finder works nice, except it was to be used with heavier bullets than I use, so I use the first chevron and simply adjust for the range on my own. Last time I was out, I was hitting the 300 yard gong with no problem.

Go to Dan's Sporting Goods website and click on the Hensoldt's Z-24 scope.
You'll like the German built with Zeiss glass 4 power fixed scope with built in bullet drop indicator that was built for battle rifle use. Plus it'll be brand new with carrying case and H&k G-3 claw mount which can be sold or traded off. I think that it was a deal at $375 when mine came in. Also, Cheaper than Dirt has an aftermarket recticle illuminator for this scope. Sarco in Shotgun News has FAL Stang top covers for this scope, or Mounting Soloutions has ARM rails that'll work, just depends on what you like.
