Faux Ivory Grips

I bought these many years ago. I know it's been a while because nephew was in Iraq with usmc at the time.
These were not expensive but were advertised as made with ivory chips.
They have aged and darkened but I was and am skeptical of the real ivory claim.View attachment 1127337 View attachment 1127338
I have no experience with the chips beyond scuttlebutt but that’s a super nice pistol ‘ wow

Have you got any skill with tools? I don’t have any ivory or bone but I do have some really fine English Walnut panels waiting to be made into something special. Let me know if you want them.

Yeah, I can run a cutting torch and a welder but wood tools torment me. I can refinish a walnut stock. I can even open up a barrel channel to take a bigger barrel but that's about it. I have a rough cut Richards Microfit stock made out of fancy English walnut and that stuff is so hard that 80 grit autobody paper on a vibrating sander wont touch it. I've been working on it off and on, mostly off for the last 8 years or so. Those panels would be wasted on me

A man’s got to know his limitations…

I though about making a set of grips from holly for my new to me 3 screw BlackHawk and staining them to look aged. Holly is hard to find in in large enough pieces to make single action grips and when you do you buy a long chunk of it and it ain't cheap.
Having a piece of 1/2" thick maple with almost no grain and very light color I have decided to experiment with that to see how close I can get to something that resembles aged ivory when the weather im[QUOTE="hawg, post: 12520725, member: 168
some. It make turn out OK or may not. The maple is just a leftover so all I'll be out is some work if it fails to meet my expectations.

Come on, Hawg. If you are worth a hoot with a torch and welding rod you can master woodworking.

Oh I can make simple stuff like a dog house or a heavy duty work table. I can even make a pretty decent rustic pedestal table but that's not shaping anything. That's just cutting and nailing. When it comes to shaping I can make two things, toothpicks and sawdust.

My Colt SAA gunsmith buddy in Ten Sleep Wyoming makes unbelievable grips along with other full service. He laughed at how long I took to me to make the grips for my 60 armys.

Custom birdshead grips, lowered and widened hammer, color case and blued.

Free wood, router, learn. Might need a belt sander too.

I actually bought one of these to shape my grips, drew out the pattern of the grips on some card stock paper for the 2 piece one's and cut them out proud to the outside of the line. Traced the pattern on the grips and sanded barely to the line. Then hand sanded and filed.
1 piece I just assembled the grips to the backstrap and guard off the gun and colored in with pencil the area's I needed to sand down.

I picked up some grip blanks at Dixie Gun Works.

Some of these there might interest you.

I need one of those. Not sure where I'd put it tho.

It’s Tiny!

Nice! I like tools and this one looks both useful and kinda cute. I’m particularly happy that the verticality is adjustable…
  • 1. Material: metal, wear-resistant
  • 2. This Electric Knife Apex Edge Sharpener With built-in double bearing,non-slip,dustproof.
  • 3. The base of the mini belt sander is made of metal, stable and sturdy.
  • 4. The verticality of the belt is adjustable.
  • 5. The belt tightness can be adjusted automatically.

Wanted something for smaller projects, and it was the perfect size for my needs.
I also wanted a small disc sander/ lathe so I picked up one of these a few years back also.

If needed, I can just do a 180 on the chuck end and have it to the outside of the lathe.
Lathe came with a small blade that turn's it into a mini table saw.
Both have an adjustable speed control switch from 12v to 24v.
If I didn't already have a Lyman case trimmer, I would probably hook up a foot switch to this and use it for such!

These are a pair of my Uberti's in .45 LC I'm playing with new grips for, when time permits. One has a .45 acp cylinder for it.

I have made grips with nothing more than a coping saw, c-clamp. a couple of files and a variety of sandpaper. Now I have power tools but the files and sandpaper are still necessary to some extent. The power tools just make for easier, not better.

I can cut the outline, no problem. It's the tapering and rounding off without having a flat spot I can't get right.
