Thinking of moving up from my Glock for my larger carry gun.

What do you think is the best? Sig, Kahr, or something else?

Guess i'm prejudiced but it's my only 40 so I have to say Sig P229R. Also it's a great shooter, operator ain't so good at times but gun is great.

The Smith 4006 may well be the best 40 pistol ever made. No longer made and highly under rated.

Another vote for the .40 BHP.

I was skeptical when I bought the gun 10 years ago or so, but I've used it extensively now, and it's one of only a few guns I own that has NEVER jammed or had any problems - the other one being my Glock 20, and my PSP.

It's not a popular gun, or a "chic" pick. It has the advantage over the other guns mentioned in that it's a single action, and in a soft shooting cartridge like the .40, in a steel gun like this, you can get some serious follow-up shots.

Only sad thing about my .40 BHP is that my wife stole it from me and uses it as her HD gun. She's a lefty, and likes its very small ergonomic grip.

You should give it some serious consideration.

Plus, Sigs aren't steel framed, they are aluminum.

Beretta 96/Beretta 90-Two. Accurate...reliable...hard to carry concealed due to their size though...

A kahr isn't "larger" than a glock, however i have a k-40 and i love it, i carry it alot, easy to conceal and wears great on my don hume open top holster. shoots good, reliable, not one malfunction ever, and accurate too to be such a small gun. nice trigger, and good sights.

+1 for the Sig 229R

It's the BMW of pistols. I love it so much I bought a matching 239. ;)

My favorite, THIS:

Some Sigs do have stainless frames.

I've owned many 40's representing most of the major players, the BHP is the only one I ever kept. Going on 15 years of flawless performance.

Favorite .40

I've only owned two: Star Firestar and BHP. This is my favorite.

Springfield P9 Ultra if you can find one. All steel, extremely well made but reasonably rare today. Most of us that have one hold on to them.

BHP is known for being inadequate at handling the .40 it was designed around 9mm, then had a bigger barrel slapped in it.

p229 was built with the .40 in mind (from the 228's 9mm only configuration) and has a heavier slide meant for it. some say this upsets balance, others say it is enhanced. I just like the thought of a milled slide over the 226's stamped.

Sigs don't have many aftermarket parts (because they're well engineered to start) but .40 in 229 converts easily to .357 sig. and the DAK conversion option is nice for CCW.

also, XD(m) handles the big recoil of the .40 superbly. the older XD Subcompact rubs the first joint of my thumb on my strong hand so i don't like it. most people love it.

maybe a CZ? word of mouth lends a good reputation. haven't heard of functionality yet.

IMO: stay away from BHP in .40, and the Glock 23 and 27 (poor recoil absorption by those plastic frames)

try and shoot them at a local range if you have somewhere nearby that rents. you'll never truly understand how it is at the gun counter, and other peoples experience wasn't with your hands.

Good Luck!

+5 (I think) Fot the P229. I'm waiting for my new SAS to keep my DAK company. Great gut, very accurate and I'm a great fan of the DAK trigger system (the SAS has it too).

This is why it's called the Error-Net.

Browning was a late entry in the 40 game because they totally redesigned the HP for the 40. In fact they delayed its introduction for nearly a year just to ensure 100% reliability with the then new 155 grain ammo being introduced to the market.

The changes include; a new manufacturing method and heat treat for the frame to increase strength (this upgrade also enhances the current 9MM versions). A totally different and much heaver slide. The locking surfaces were increases by 33% with the addition of a third locking lug on the barrel. The recoil spring and ejector are also different items for the 40.

I suggest a little research, reading, gunsmithing courses and owning three or four hundred guns before offering such opinions as gospel.

And, as to the
(poor recoil absorption by those plastic frames)
I'm not even going to discuss such foolishness.

I offered my opinions at face value: opinions only

I talk with 2 gun smiths daily at work, one owns over 15 BHP's, seems knowledgeable and imparted this wisdom to me when i considered buying one that the store couldn't sell because it was a red headed step child. but you've owned lots'oguns and know that there are brownings modded from factory to accept .40 and another made specifically for. most I see at the gun shows are the "upgraded" models, sans the relief cut for the slide release on the left side of the slide. as the good .40's don't seem to make the rounds that often.

I still on the other hand feel the slide is too stiff, and kicks like a mule for a gun that shoots so well in 9mm. same problem with the Glock 19 and 23

as for this:
I'm not even going to discuss such foolishness.
are you saying that high schools physics' are wrong? the lighter weight is better at resisting the forces of inertia?

After re-reading the original post, I realize he meant steel to begin with, and plastic frames are out of the question. If this is your gripe, then poo-poo. you keyboard commandos get on my nerves trying to tear down what everyone says. while I may be slightly misinformed, you soak the conversation with your accolades of owning so many guns and make yourself come off as needing to impress somebody rather than someone who has wisdom to share. I didn't care how many guns you have and would have listened just the same had you just stated, but your "error-net" comment came off as pithy and necessitated this reply.

revel in your wisdom, but try and show some humility.
