FBI chief: Gun ruling makes campuses less secure

Mon Jun 30, 11:16 PM ET

HARTFORD, Conn. - FBI Director Robert Mueller on Monday criticized the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, saying it may harm efforts to deter violent crime.

Speaking at a convention of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators in Hartford, Mueller said the ruling "does throw a lot of things up in the air."

By a 5-4 vote last week, the nation's highest court struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns, the first major pronouncement on gun rights in history. It upheld the right for communities to license guns.

Mueller said communities will have to determine their own license programs. As a former Marine who served in Vietnam, he said "I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."

With his grandchildren going to college, Mueller said he hopes "those campuses will be weapons free."

Mueller said the FBI's top priority remains counterterrorism, counter-intelligence and protecting the secrets of the United States.

He said college campuses and small communities could be "potential incubators of terrorism" even while major cities such as New York and Los Angeles remain primary targets for terrorists.

"The fact is we can't rule out any community in the United States as a potential incubator of terrorism," Mueller said.

Methinks that Herr Müeller is not worthy to be a representative of a free people.

this guy needs zumboing more than anyone in history

Gun free campuses, stripped and ripe for slaughter.

The kind of mental blankout it takes to expect criminals to abide by the law is quite staggering.

Has he, and many others, ever thought about why precisely schools are the target of mass murderers, hmm?

I'm sick of everyone using terrorism fears as a vehicle to achieve their political goals.

It was unacceptable in 2001, and it's still unacceptable today.

What a tool...and for some reason I got a flashback to the cheesy late 80's movie where the "terrorists" take over the private school and the general's son leads an interior coup, thus saving the day :) Anyone know the movie?

EDIT: Found it...TOY SOLDIERS, circa 1991

He is an appointee and should **** and do his job. In my opinion 9-11 and Katrina are huge factors in the increasingly sober public realization that self defense is not some quaint eighteenth century concept. Incubator huh?

<< Mueller said communities will have to determine their own license programs. As a former Marine who served in Vietnam, he said "I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them." >>

So why do FBI agents carry hardware????

What he is really saying:

"Since I am big government, I may have guns. I don't like you having guns."

once you understand that, everything else is just smoke and mirrors

he said "I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."
Mine hasn't ever threatened me, much less hurt me. It's always polite and respectful to it's elders, and always says please & thank you. You just have to raise them right and make sure they're not using the internet without supervision.

Mueller ...said "I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."

I'd love to debate Director Mueller on this statement.

You really can't expect or trust any LE official to publicly depart from an anti-gun or anti-gun rights position. It's too risky for them.

Luckily, positions like Mueller's aren't very important right now.

As a former Marine who served in Vietnam, he said "I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."

Wow...

Marines, please speak up, but I didn't know most marines got hurt by their own weapons rather than use them against the enemy.

I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them

I suggest he institute better training for his agents because everyone I know has never had a problem carrying a gun and shooting themselves or others.

Maybe the FBI should issue airsoft weapons if he's that worried.

Mueller said the FBI's top priority remains counterterrorism, counter-intelligence and protecting the secrets of the United States.
Investigation of and fighting crime is ranking priority number... ? What's that? Maybe #'s 4 & 5?
With his grandchildren going to college, Mueller said he hopes "those campuses will be weapons free."
What is wrong w/ campuses being "Helpless Victim" free? Or "Crime" free because criminals know that there exist a good number of law abiding, yet lurking sheepdogs on campuses who are gaining their own educational credits?
FBI Director Robert Mueller on Monday criticized the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense...
Always good to know that the tooth backing the robe acknowledges messages received and understood, not to mention that Bill of Rights thing.
"I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."
I tend to disbelieve that statement if personal experience counts for anything... tho' I did once watch an educational video of a DEA agent...

Having been present at BATFE inspections where FBI Agents were working with them and filling in for BATFE understaffing, I can honestly say I dearly hope they never merge those two departments of federal law enforcement.
The BATFE agents are much nicer and more decent people,,,,,,,
