GRAPHIC IMAGES - WARNING!

This is a FBI/DOJ Powerpoint presentation I found over on Sniper's Hide. It is basically an after action report of a protracted shootout involving three officers and one suspect.

Weapons involved were Glock 22 firing Speer 180gr Gold Dots and M4s firing 55 & 75gr Hornady TAP .223 ammunition.

Notice how quick the coroner/M.E. was to slam the .40 S&W initially, and praise the .223 TAP!

It always boils down to shot placement. This is just another example. Notice how many hits the suspect took in the extremeties; almost none could be described as COM. Still, the officers involved did great, considering the shootout apparently lasted about 3 1/2 minutes.

Easily the most important bullet point of that presentation:

There is plenty of inaccurate information regarding ballistics/terminal performance disseminated on web forums, even those which are dedicated as LE only.

It worked fine for me, as a regular PowerPoint.

I'm curious about the tats the BG had, I can't make out the one around his neck, but I get the distinct impression this dude was well known to the local LE folks. The tat on his arm proved to be pretty well chosen!

wow that guy took a beating with the bullets didnt he? He's got more holes than a mill sifter!

PJ, the tat on his neck says "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" which I guess didn't pan out for him either :p

Considering that they were reporting only 1" penetration from the .40 S&W yet the HP's were expanded I'm thinking that they were firing at the perp thru a vehicle or something else. Sounds like he was getting hit by slugs that had punched thru a few other objects before getting to him. Seems that someone was in a hurry to place the blame on the pistol choice but didn't look at all the facts. As much as the .40 may or may not suck, any of the loadings for it are capable of at least 5" of penetration so something about only getting 1" of penetration should have raised suspicions.

The story I heard was that the bullets expanded inside the coat and thus hit the perp pre-expanded and at a reduced velocity, and penetrated pretty shallowly.

I also didn't see any entry/exit wounds in the right elbow area as per the X-rays. Considering that it shattered his elbow I would have expected some more visible damage, shots that hit bone that close to the skin tend to exhibit a lot more tissue damage

Well at least he didn't live long enough to regret getting the tats. :)

Anyone see the one .40 S&W round in his neck? It's completely unexpanded.

I do not own the mac I'm using so I can't download power point

Can someone explain what happened? who had the G22? good guy or bad guy?
Who had .223? good guy or bad guy?
maybe put photos here?
thanks.

If one were to explain the importance of shot placement, in very blunt terms: "Smash the spine, and you end the fight."

The bad guy was armed with a .45 ACP. The police were armed with G22's . The .40 S&W rounds only penetrated one inch, which is freaking amazing. I wonder why that is...
