No longer a hypothetical. This thread will help build a final product.

This will be my first ground-up build so I had some pretty basic questions come up. Mostly objective, maybe one or two discussion starters.

In researching barrels I noticed a good amount paired with a bolt. I'm guessing the idea there is a bolt pre-headspaced to your specific barrel.
Any other benefits to this?
The reason I ask is that I had been looking at Wilson combat bcg's and rainier barrels, and hadn't heard of bolt/barrel combos.

I plan on using a Larue Stealth upper but am still in the air about a lower.
Definitely CNC. I wanted a Larue but they stopped producing stripped lowers. I own an LMT, so I may go that route. Thoughts?

Outside of solid receivers and a match barrel/bolt, I am on to weight reduction. I'm looking at carbon fiber hand guards, and a strong but light adjustable stock.
Any input in those categories is appreciated as I don't have much experience there.

She will sport a HAMR, 762-SDN-6 and I'll probably do the whole platform in FDE.
I'll have about $500/mo. going into this so stay tuned because it won't be long.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts, criticisms, etc. all appreciated.

Edit: adjustable gas blocks. No idea.

For the Adj gas block go with the new Syrac Ordnance Gen 2 that adjusts without a screw.

Matching the bolt to the barrel is always a good idea not only does it ensure correct headspacing it promotes accuracy and as far as I know you can have any bolt matched to your barrel by a gunsmith or some barrel makers will let you send them your bolt and match it for you. Have you ordered your barrel yet? Most WC barrels are a 6 month wait now. Check out the Lancer for a cool but expensive handguard.

Sorry I just noticed you said Rainier barrel and WC bcg.

Hey fellas thanks for the tips.
Mike, I'll definitely take a look at Syrac. I'm assuming you advise from personal experience? Any specifics on your choice over others?
GaSwamper, I had been looking at Lancers, good to know someone else recommends them.
I think I'll go ahead with the bolt barrel combo. Seeing as I'm paying for the match barrel anyhow, and am trying to squeeze every ounce of accuracy from my platform.
Anyone have any real time experience with rainier barrels? I see they're made from Shilen blanks. I have heard of Shilen but not Rainier until I started looking at 300blk barrels.

I went with a complete DPMS upper from Midwayusa then made it how I wanted with a midwest industries hand guard, Brownells low profile gas block, extended charging handle, laser engraved dust cover and bipod The lower I built from parts.
The rifle is a sub moa shooter and came out nice.

I just built an AR couple days ago with a focus on weight reduction. I used an AP Customs carbon fiber tactical handguard. They make two models, the tactical which has a full length top rail and the standard which does not. Both rails come with short rail sections for mounting small accesories. I only needed the top rail to mount a buis. The 12" only weighs 7.8oz. To make it even lighter, I replaced the top rail with a short section. Also, unlike some other carbon handguards, the AP unit uses a two piece mounting block that clamps onto the factory barrel nut obviating the use of epoxy. At $189 it's price competitive with many other rails on the market.

Glad I could help out I think those APs are nice too the lancer is the ones they put on the Christianson Arms, don't ever hold that rifle btw. I decided not to go carbon because I found a Samson special design for 5.56 tactical that weighs 10 oz. Chek it out before u decide its pretty slick.

Hey fellas thanks for the tips.

Yes, I own 2 with another on order. For starters, despite the T&A advertising style and bragging about being a "young company" "less than 2 years old" (which would give me confidence why?) it is a very well made high quality part.

Why Syrac and not Seekens or JP? I prefer countable positions to full rotation with a set screw for repeatable adjustments like when switching from suppressed subsonic to unsupressed supersonic. I have no idea how Seekens' side adjustment is going to line up with my rail holes (might be better if you have a barrel mounted front sight) vs Syrac's end adjustment. As far as JP, they are big beefy sight base models and for the low profile stuff, they sell the Syrac on their own web page. I'm kind of a long rail Recce kind of guy.

So I've got a pretty basic question again regarding this build.
I'm having a hard time finding the name brand uppers and lowers I was looking for.
Would you guys find any reliability/accuracy issues with beginning on a finished rifle (DD)?
I'm wondering if starting with a finished product and then slowly replacing the stock parts with match parts would yield any substantial differences in performance? (To the negative side)
Example, buying the completed M4V5 as the base and moving slowly in the direction of the original post, rather than ground up.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Nothing wrong with starting with a base rifle then changing it to haow you want. I started with a DPMS complete upper then changed out the gas block and hand guard, the lower I bought stripped and built it from parts.
If that's the way you want to go then get one and you will be fine. People do it all the time with no issues.

FWIW, I would maybe expand your horizons on upper/lower combos. Take a look at the Mega Arms billet pieces. I have the forged upper/lower and couldn't be happier.

I appreciate both of y'all's feedback. I went ahead today on a DDM4V5-300.
I think I did well at just over sixteen for the rifle and a set of Troy buis.
This summer will consist of acquiring and installing match grade barrel, bolt, trigger, and carbon fiber forend. Along with furniture swaps and a paint job, I'm hoping to make this a tight shooting, lightweight hunter for central Tx. game under 500yds.
Still floating around about glass and a stock replacement. tuhapube.jpg

Hopefully you've looked into this round enough to realize that ethical bunting won't happen with 500 yard shots. Even starting with a 200yd zero that round drops almost 85" between 200 and 500yds, and is down to around 475ft lbs energy. That's calculated using a Nosler 125 BT at 2300.

I've never taken a shot on a deer or hog in Tx over 200yds anyway so I'm not super worried about it. I've spent a little over a year saving up and shopping around, so yeah I've looked into it. Owned an AAC upper for a while that I enjoyed putting on my LMT so I've got a bit of first hand experience with the round as well. I do appreciate the heads up though.
I'm looking very seriously at the Leupold VX-R 3-9x40mm with the tac-mil firedot. Thoughts?

Before you go discounting the parts you have, barrel and bolt, you may be surprised at their accuracy out of the box, especially since they are a matched set. Spend your money on a trigger, forend and other goodies, the round isn't known for inherent accuracy to begin with. For sub 200yds, you're probably ahead of the game now.

That's not a bad piece of advice.
You're thinking the difference made with a match grade barrel wouldn't be noticeable enough to justify the swap?

Ok THR, here's where I stand.
I've gone ahead with the Leupold VXR 3-9x40 with the TMR green firedot, a Larue LT104-30mm rings, the Lancer LCH5 rifle length carbon fiber free float tube with two 2" rails sections forward mounted 12&6 o'clock, and one L5AWM mag in opaque FDE just to test with the weapon.
I've also fit the DD with a Magpul ACS-L in FDE, and an ergo grip in FDE.

I shoot with my family and friends who don't all have very deep knowledge of, or experience with, firearms. I'm calling this FDE buying spree the "Please don't try to chamber 5.56 in the tan gun project" by only loading 300blk into FDE mags for the FDE weapon
(I've also got an evil, black, LMT)

This is where she sits now, will post more pics and reviews of each product as they are received. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1399138860.588662.jpg
I want to thank y'all for all the great input so far, and I welcome your critiques, advice, and additional general feedback.

That's a pretty nice build! And I'm impressed you were able to put that together yourself. You know, being an 11 and all! ;)

Nice. I have an SSA-E, and I think it's exactly the same as the SD-E except for the flat trigger. Geissele makes some of the best triggers you can buy.

I got my paws on an SDE a few days ago and really took to that flat surface.
My LMT's stock two stage is really nice for what it is
But on this platform I'm excited to get to know the new trigger

You are going to love that trigger, that's what I put on my blackout.

On amazon there is a seller "squirrel daddy" that sells a laser engraved dust cover with "300 Blackout" on both sides for a really good price. Nice accessory to get. That will help with preventing ammo mistakes.

Everything is ordered. Now I wait!
Just finished up today with the super dynamic enhanced trigger, badass ambi safety, bcm gunfighter charging handle, and an anti reflection device for the Leupold
Psyched for this build fellas

I'm taking orphanedcowboy's advice and waiting to gauge her performance before replacing the barrel and internals.

Yes, I was going to say the same. That DD that you purchased and paid dearly for is a very high-quality model with little need for parts changeout. Which is different than the 'want' for parts changeout. It's very unlikely that it will want for accuracy or dependability. But these are Barbie rifles and I've done parts change outs myself, though not on a DD.
Enjoy the basic rifle for a while if you can.

P.S. Oops, read the rest of the thread. Too late.
