Well, I've been putting it off, because I didn't know where I would move this summer, and Arkansas has moderately annoying laws. Well, I'm staying here, and starting law school - which is located in the GHETTO! I started thinking about it last night, and I realized I had a lot of questions. First of all, what is the best backpack with a built-in pocket for a gun? With my size, my clothes, and my gun, it really would be very difficult for me to pull off a concealed carry on my actual body. I guess I could get a small gun, but I like my .45, and I still think it would be uncomfortable and hard to conceal. Also, I'm not sure how to deal with actually going to school, since I can't carry AT the school. Since it's located in the ghetto, I want the gun with me when I go to and from school, but I'm not sure about leaving it in the car. What's the safest way to do that? My second question is - how do you know exactely where you're allowed to carry? I know what the list is, according to the law, but I'm kind of worried... for example "Any public park, unless for the purpose of participating in any authorized firearms-related activity." - so if I walk my dog, I can't walk through a park? And can I really assume that any place that is not on the list, and that doesn't have a big sign at the front of the building, is okay to carry in? So many of the places that I would actually be going to are on the no-no list (school, government buildings, courts, parks, church, restaurants, bars) that I guess it comes back to finding a safe way to leave it in my car. How do you guys handle this?

Ladybug,
Congratulations. You've decided to take responsibility for your own safety, and I'll bet you'll see that attitude drift over into all areas of your daily behavior. I assume you intend to get proper training in defensive practices both with and without a handgun. That's good.

For answers to many legal and technique questions, try http://www.packing.org/

Regarding off-body carry: I get the willies thinking about you in a dangerous situation with your weapon in a backpack. Sorry, but you'll be dead meat before you could get to the weapon. Think of something else, please! FWIW. I give this same advice to Leatherness without avail...:banghead:

Regarding school-controlled property that undoubtedly has a no-guns policy. Balance carefully the consequences of carrying and using your gun in duress, and not having it in such a situation. I think I'd opt for very discreet carry and accept the forced transfer if discovered. YMMV.

Get legal and get trained and be cool!

dont dismiss the idea of carrying your .45 on your person too quickly. an article i just read this last week made the correct statement that "carrying concealed will require a change in attitude, conduct, thinking, even lifestyle".
you may need to reconsider your wardrobe and find suitable ways to carry on your person. it will take experimentation and much shopping around to find out where it is most CONVENIENT (not comfortable) for you to ccw, as well as most TACTICAL. you will eventually find a holster that fits you perfectly. custom leatherworkers can help you out and tailor the holster so that it fits like a glove, a glove you can hardly tell is being worn.

as far as where to carry, study your states statutes, you'll find links to them at packing.org; and it may take a phone call to a lawyer or even the states prosecutors office to get the most accurate definitions. you'll likely be able to ask the CCW instructor if they are aware of places that are gun-friendly.

good luck.

Ladybug, concerning your question of leaving your CCW in the car while at school. Consider purchasing a small safe and having a friend help you mount it in an inconspicuous location like the trunk or under the seat. This makes it harder for a would-be thief to get to it without some serious tools and time. If you take some minor precautions and practice some situational awareness techniques you can make the transition from your person to the safe and back without alarming anyone or endangering yourself too much. Be sure to check your local and state laws regarding transporting and storage inside of your vehicle before considering the above mentioned suggestion.

CONGRATULATIONS and Good Luck !

Edited for Megcatia's suggestion concerning possesion on school property. I was thinking this too, Maybe off campus parking ?

Ladybug,
I just took my Ark CHL class and I hope to have my license back soon(soon being a relative term).
The person teaching the law portion of the class really stressed the no firearms at a school law. Make sure you get the real low down on this. I believe he said colleges are different that K-12 schools but the K-12 schools are out of the question period.
Not in buildings, not in parking lot, not on property.

Which law school in Arkansas? From what I remember, Fayetteville is not a ghetto--are you talking about UALR?

Congrats Ladybug.

Feel free to pm or e-mail me since I'm in the city where your classes will be.

As you know the CCW laws were recently amended to include parks, and resturants where alcohol is served.

Dillon and others have the "carry tote" that has the concealed compartment--resembles a soft sided tote for a lap top. I forgot whom has the backpack.

The area where the school is: well lets just say during the day "it's interesting"...gets moreso when the sun goes down. Once your there -one has strength in #'s. Its is the getting there and leaving that gets iffy. Basically , many choose to follow each other to a from.

I have follwed students to campus, or agree to be in parking lot when class over. Especially when weather/vehicle is acting up/ things are a bit unsettling as far as "political/social climate".

I attend a different college. I too deal with the CCW. Offline may be best, on how I handle this.

I believe in " Don't tell everything one knows". I spent too many years in a business where "advertising" gets one in trouble. This internet can be a good or bad thing.

The people I assisted with and the private range I had access to is closed. I don't know everything, but I have sources, and I don't mind asking questions.

If you need ideas on what part of town to live in, schools, churches,...etc. Holler.

Another Thought. I have both the AR resident, and FL non resident. CCW The AR is flagged on DL as you know. The FL is not. I know many whom have just the non res FL that live here.

Something to consider if one needs to travel say to FL. I'm legal in AR, I'm legal in FL, it is the states b/t the 2 the AR does not recip. I used my FL to be legal in PA last fall. So something to consider is where you might be traveling when not in class. AR is 4 years, Fl is 5 years. We had a few take the FL and then when relocated is was no big deal to give change of address.

Best of luck.

I assume you a talking Little Rock. I know that the "NO SCHOOL" law is ridicules and a pain in the hinny. This is where the judged by 12 or carried by 6 question comes in, but then again how would it look being arrested in law school for packing heat.
I can understand having a favorite gun, but if it's too big to carry on your person it's not doing you any good. It might be a wise choice to find a smaller gun to carry. Smaller gun does not necessarily mean mouse gun. Anyway, that's my $0.02 worth. Good luck in school and your quest to protect yourself.

re1973,

is this new or a local law that you can carry where alcohol is served? It just changed here recently that you can carry where it is sold but not consumed but I thought you still could not carry where it is served.

Ladybug, congrats!!! I am trying to figure the same stuff out and you definitely should look into carrying on your person rather than in a backpack.

My solution - small revolver on me and another gun in a backpack.

Thanks
Sheslinger

are you talking about UALR?

Yes.

We're buying a house in the Hillcrest area, so I'll be driving through the ghetto to get to the ghetto. I don't actually know what the law is as far as whether I can drive onto the law school parking area with a gun or not... I know I can't carry in the building (nor would I want to jeopardize my future career by getting caught doing so). I do not want to park outside of the fenced-in parking area, because it's BAD. I think I will look at some smaller Berettas to carry, and just keep my trusty .45 at home. I loved my .380, but size wise it wasn't much smaller than what I have now. I do know several people who will be starting law school with me, who also live in the Hillcrest/Heights area, so maybe we can carpool or at least follow each other. The bad thing will be if I need to go to the law library at night.

What are the classes like - how many hours do you have to attend, and what to they teach? Do you guys who live here know if there are only classes in Little Rock or other parts of the state? We live in Fayetteville right now, and won't be moving to LR until July, so I may have to wait until then. I'm actually headed to the State Police Headquarters now, to get some more info.

Thanks for all the great advice - I really appreciate it!!!

Haven't been in Little Rock since '89, but as I recall, UALR was not in shall we say, the choicest of areas. And UAPB [U of Ark @ Pine Bluff was....well, ghetto is being too kind.

{son that won tickets from one of the radio stations back then didn't understand why I refused to take him to the Run-DMC concert @ Hyper Arena in PB on Halloween night}.

Back to the thread, though...no carry on school grounds is a bad thing....i.e. the Shooter here in Cleveland @ Case Western. Lots of face time on the local "news" outlets about how scared everybody was....took the SWAT team over an hour to arrive, and they seemed to be unable/unwilling to go in after the shooter. 1 or 2 armed citizens would have ended that very quickly.

So find something you are comfortable with, and go "deep cover." Changing law schools is much better that your survivors having to change their shattered lives because you are no longer there.

Sheslinger:

AR legislature just amended carry into parks and resturants where alcohol is served.

I don't have the particulars. It is to take effect 90 days from passing, which I also don't have handy.

I believe the ok in parks is largely due to "Morgan Nick", a child was abducted in park at a ball game years ago...still missing. " Morgan Nick became an alert system much like Amber alert in other states ( now a nat'l deal).

I don't believe any 51% , or any other restictions to aclohol/restaurants will apply. Still waiting on details. Like anywhere else here in AR anyone can, WITH PROPER signage ,state you may not carry into that business, includes restaurants.

btw, Faded Rose restaurant was the most vocal against firearms in restaurants...oh well been too many years since I ate there anyway, too many other fine places to eat...If one were to visit...hint hint.

Since I just finished this semester and finals I need to check up on this , before I start the summer session.

I loved my .380, but size wise it wasn't much smaller than what I have now.

Look at or better yet, try, a NAA .380 Guardian. Very small, very concealable, and mine is very reliable with HP and FMJ. My wife prefers her .380 PPK, but the Guardian is smaller and doesn't knock skin off my hand. :D

I agree with those who say get a gun that's easier to conceal on your person. I know, I love my .45, too, but it's not always practical to carry it in all situations. I know that some women greet each other with a hug, you may want to consider this, also when deciding method of carry.

OK, yes congrats on lawschool as well. I work for a couple of lawyers, but never felt myself capable of actually doing the law school thing. I am a mere paralegal working for one of the oldest practicing lawyers in Portland right now.

Bookmark this page: www.packing.org

It's the best source of gun laws I've found.

As far as carrying concealed, "concealed" is the word. The only place I don't carry is the Federal, County courthouses and the Airport. Schools are another place to be careful, like don't carry.

Anything else, like walking Sparky in the park, grocery store, bank, Post Office, I don't worry about it, because it's concealed and it doesn't show and .... you get the picture.

As far as concealed carry for a young lady going to lawschool. Hmm. Every girl carries a purse, right? So, they make concealed carry purses. They make concealed carry clothing. I've seen concealed carry organizers (something all lawyers have). Should accommodate a .45.

Dillon has a nice selection of concealed carry equipment - briefcase, and I believe a purse. www.dillonprecision.com A light Blazer will conceal any IWB handgun.

Good luck, and I applaud your decision to take care of number one!!

re1973,

"I believe the ok in parks is largely due to "Morgan Nick", a child was abducted in park at a ball game years ago...still missing. " Morgan Nick became an alert system much like Amber alert in other states ( now a nat'l deal)."

This is a tough call. There is a portion of the law that reads:

5-73-306. Prohibited places.
(a) No license issued pursuant to this subchapter shall authorize any person to carry a concealed handgun into:
.....
(12) Any athletic event not related to firearms;

This one makes me curious about Little League games and soccer practice.

Like I said , I don't have the particulars-yet. yes it is true that unless 'firearm related' one prohibited-currently.

If you'll recall just recently ( last 2-4 wks, lost track of time), legislation was passed. These dealt with parks and restaurants.

Also recall the big stink about LEO , plainsclothes, carrying in Alltell arena...

So, I am curious , myself on any restrictions. From the passing of legislation, we have to wait 90 days...ok what is exact date?

Granted things could be worse, then again grateful to have what we do have. I'd just as soon have the gummit just trash all gun laws ...but my views on that are well known and in other threads.

re1973,
I'm grateful for what we have too. It could be worse from some of the things I've seen here.
I heard(grain of salt) that it's 90 days from April 16.

Congratulations Ladybug.
What a great thing to take responsibility for your own safety. Good luck on school and your carry options.

I consider it a great day when I picked up my CCW. Waiting on a Fla. non-res permit now which buys me another 17-18 states - LEGALLY!
