Well, I've been putting it off, because I didn't know where I would move this summer, and Arkansas has moderately annoying laws. Well, I'm staying here, and starting law school - which is located in the GHETTO! I started thinking about it last night, and I realized I had a lot of questions. First of all, what is the best backpack with a built-in pocket for a gun? With my size, my clothes, and my gun, it really would be very difficult for me to pull off a concealed carry on my actual body. I guess I could get a small gun, but I like my .45, and I still think it would be uncomfortable and hard to conceal. Also, I'm not sure how to deal with actually going to school, since I can't carry AT the school. Since it's located in the ghetto, I want the gun with me when I go to and from school, but I'm not sure about leaving it in the car. What's the safest way to do that? My second question is - how do you know exactely where you're allowed to carry? I know what the list is, according to the law, but I'm kind of worried... for example "Any public park, unless for the purpose of participating in any authorized firearms-related activity." - so if I walk my dog, I can't walk through a park? And can I really assume that any place that is not on the list, and that doesn't have a big sign at the front of the building, is okay to carry in? So many of the places that I would actually be going to are on the no-no list (school, government buildings, courts, parks, church, restaurants, bars) that I guess it comes back to finding a safe way to leave it in my car. How do you guys handle this?

Regarding off-body carry: I get the willies thinking about you in a dangerous situation with your weapon in a backpack. Sorry, but you'll be dead meat before you could get to the weapon. Think of something else, please! FWIW. I give this same advice to Leatherness without avail...:banghead:
Regarding school-controlled property that undoubtedly has a no-guns policy. Balance carefully the consequences of carrying and using your gun in duress, and not having it in such a situation. I think I'd opt for very discreet carry and accept the forced transfer if discovered. YMMV.

dont dismiss the idea of carrying your .45 on your person too quickly. an article i just read this last week made the correct statement that "carrying concealed will require a change in attitude, conduct, thinking, even lifestyle".
you may need to reconsider your wardrobe and find suitable ways to carry on your person. it will take experimentation and much shopping around to find out where it is most CONVENIENT (not comfortable) for you to ccw, as well as most TACTICAL. you will eventually find a holster that fits you perfectly. custom leatherworkers can help you out and tailor the holster so that it fits like a glove, a glove you can hardly tell is being worn.
as far as where to carry, study your states statutes, you'll find links to them at packing.org; and it may take a phone call to a lawyer or even the states prosecutors office to get the most accurate definitions. you'll likely be able to ask the CCW instructor if they are aware of places that are gun-friendly.

Ladybug, concerning your question of leaving your CCW in the car while at school. Consider purchasing a small safe and having a friend help you mount it in an inconspicuous location like the trunk or under the seat. This makes it harder for a would-be thief to get to it without some serious tools and time. If you take some minor precautions and practice some situational awareness techniques you can make the transition from your person to the safe and back without alarming anyone or endangering yourself too much. Be sure to check your local and state laws regarding transporting and storage inside of your vehicle before considering the above mentioned suggestion.

The person teaching the law portion of the class really stressed the no firearms at a school law. Make sure you get the real low down on this. I believe he said colleges are different that K-12 schools but the K-12 schools are out of the question period.

Something to consider if one needs to travel say to FL. I'm legal in AR, I'm legal in FL, it is the states b/t the 2 the AR does not recip. I used my FL to be legal in PA last fall. So something to consider is where you might be traveling when not in class. AR is 4 years, Fl is 5 years. We had a few take the FL and then when relocated is was no big deal to give change of address.

I can understand having a favorite gun, but if it's too big to carry on your person it's not doing you any good. It might be a wise choice to find a smaller gun to carry. Smaller gun does not necessarily mean mouse gun. Anyway, that's my $0.02 worth. Good luck in school and your quest to protect yourself.

We're buying a house in the Hillcrest area, so I'll be driving through the ghetto to get to the ghetto. I don't actually know what the law is as far as whether I can drive onto the law school parking area with a gun or not... I know I can't carry in the building (nor would I want to jeopardize my future career by getting caught doing so). I do not want to park outside of the fenced-in parking area, because it's BAD. I think I will look at some smaller Berettas to carry, and just keep my trusty .45 at home. I loved my .380, but size wise it wasn't much smaller than what I have now. I do know several people who will be starting law school with me, who also live in the Hillcrest/Heights area, so maybe we can carpool or at least follow each other. The bad thing will be if I need to go to the law library at night.
What are the classes like - how many hours do you have to attend, and what to they teach? Do you guys who live here know if there are only classes in Little Rock or other parts of the state? We live in Fayetteville right now, and won't be moving to LR until July, so I may have to wait until then. I'm actually headed to the State Police Headquarters now, to get some more info.

Haven't been in Little Rock since '89, but as I recall, UALR was not in shall we say, the choicest of areas. And UAPB [U of Ark @ Pine Bluff was....well, ghetto is being too kind.

Back to the thread, though...no carry on school grounds is a bad thing....i.e. the Shooter here in Cleveland @ Case Western. Lots of face time on the local "news" outlets about how scared everybody was....took the SWAT team over an hour to arrive, and they seemed to be unable/unwilling to go in after the shooter. 1 or 2 armed citizens would have ended that very quickly.
So find something you are comfortable with, and go "deep cover." Changing law schools is much better that your survivors having to change their shattered lives because you are no longer there.

I don't believe any 51% , or any other restictions to aclohol/restaurants will apply. Still waiting on details. Like anywhere else here in AR anyone can, WITH PROPER signage ,state you may not carry into that business, includes restaurants.
btw, Faded Rose restaurant was the most vocal against firearms in restaurants...oh well been too many years since I ate there anyway, too many other fine places to eat...If one were to visit...hint hint.

I agree with those who say get a gun that's easier to conceal on your person. I know, I love my .45, too, but it's not always practical to carry it in all situations. I know that some women greet each other with a hug, you may want to consider this, also when deciding method of carry.

OK, yes congrats on lawschool as well. I work for a couple of lawyers, but never felt myself capable of actually doing the law school thing. I am a mere paralegal working for one of the oldest practicing lawyers in Portland right now.

As far as concealed carry for a young lady going to lawschool. Hmm. Every girl carries a purse, right? So, they make concealed carry purses. They make concealed carry clothing. I've seen concealed carry organizers (something all lawyers have). Should accommodate a .45.
Dillon has a nice selection of concealed carry equipment - briefcase, and I believe a purse. www.dillonprecision.com A light Blazer will conceal any IWB handgun.

This is a tough call. There is a portion of the law that reads:

If you'll recall just recently ( last 2-4 wks, lost track of time), legislation was passed. These dealt with parks and restaurants.
Also recall the big stink about LEO , plainsclothes, carrying in Alltell arena...
