I would say that for dual purpose like you are looking for, you need to go with a variable power model. A 3-9X40 or 4-12X40 would be my suggestion. Also, make sure it is an adjustable objective (AO) scope. That will enable you to keep your target in focus whether it is 50 yds or 500 yds.

As far as brands, I agree that the Zeiss, Bushnell 3200 or 4200 series, and Leupold are the way to go. You should find something by those mfg's that fir the above criteria within your budget.

I too was a big fan of Leupold....until I tried a Zeiss Conquest in 3x9x50. They can be had on the gun auction sites (or eBay, (gasp)) for around $400.00. German glass assembled in USA if I'm not mistaken. A lot of bang for the buck.
