Thinking about a rider to insure guns.Waiting for homeowner provider to get back to me.Is there a firearm only company etc that will be better. What has THR members learned and can give advice.....Don
Looked into it recently. Weighed the options. Decided instead to put the funding toward the best safe I could afford, and bolt it into a strong corner of the structure, bottom/back/one side all bolted down.
Mixed emotions about more folks knowing what I have and the serial numbers.
Since all the records at the insurance company are in computer files, if hackers can get into Target, they can get into insurance files to see what you have along with the government.
I considered insurance and feel a quality fire safe is a better option, plus you can keep other valuables in it besides guns.
There are ways to have a backdated list of serial numbers in the event of a claim.
Prepare your documentation incl serial numbers. Send it to yourself as registered mail. Keep the receipt. When it is delivered, store the *unopened* envelope and receipt offsite in a safe place.
If you need to later make a claim, have the insurance company rep open (with witnesses) the sealed envelope. Proof of prior ownership...
Of course, you need to let your insurance carrier know the general outline of what they are covering so they can charge the correct rate.
A relative is an American Family Insurance agent. After submitting my inventory, complete with serial numbers, photos, and replacement value based on Gunbroker prices, I was informed that AF would only insure guns for which I had a purchase receipt, or had been appraised by a gun dealer. So everything that I had acquired by swapping would have to be appraised.
