Looking to purchase my first rifle. Going to go with a .22LR for fun, cost etc. This will be for target shooting, iron and red dot sights (mostly indoors, hopefully outdoors to
100 yards in the spring).

Just looking for best recommendatin based on cost, ability to upgrade etc.
I know Ruger 10/22 you can basically do anything you want, but not looking to spend $1k either.

Any suggestions and reccomendations would be appreciated!

I really like the bolt actions.

can't go wrong with Savage MkII
Marilin XT
CZ 452/455

My choice would be the CZ 452. The rifles that my LGS was selling for $450 just 8 months ago are not selling for $280

If the ability to upgrade is a big factor for you then your option choice is easy.....Ruger 10/22.

But if the ability to upgrade and modify your rifile isn't that important then go with a Marlin 795. It's cheap around $100 dollars, so if it doesn't meet or fit all your needs you can simpy go buy a different gun(if you so chose) since this one won't eat up all the cash in your pocket.

10/22 they are not that expensive. You can go wild on upgrading them, but that would be your fault not the rifle's.

Marlin 795 would be your best bet, after rebate you are looking at around $100-$110 for a rifle that is very reliable and accurate.

You can go with a 10/22 for close to double that. Both are fine rifles.

Just go with the 10/22 and leave it stock. They are awesome little guns. I think those 10/22s that have all of the expensive aftermarket stuff on them are counter intuitive.

I think the CZ 452 would be the most accurate stock. You can have a good trigger for $20 in the YoDave kit.I bought one because I wanted one before the 455 replaces them. There are still a few around new for good deals.

There is a 1022 ,I can't remember the name, that is a slight factory upgrade that is nice for plinking and targets as well.

A Henry bolt would be a lot of fun plinking also with iron sights but the CZ Ultralux has some of the best irons out there, and with a rear peep it is scary accurate because of the extreme sight radius.

I got a Marlin 880 SQ (discontinued model) from Walmart in 1999 for $ 210 otd. It has a bullbarrel and very accurate . I even shot birds for fun at 75 yds drt many times back then.

Id say, get a Marlin , the microrifling makes it accurate for all bullet weights. Just my experience. And have fun ....

BTW the Savage Mk 2 BV bolt action .22 lr is sure a nice one to have.

I love love love my Savage Mark 2. Its a great target rifle. Throw a decent 4x scope on it and it'll shoot little groups, cheaply, all day long.

I'd buy whatever you like. It's next to impossible to find a consistently bad review on any rimfire being made by any of the big companies today. Some have more fans than others, but there doesn't tend to be many that get a consensus to stay away. With that said, look around and find what you like. Find the one that offers what you want. They all do basically the same thing in slightly different ways. Find the one that seems best to you and enjoy. Other than a survival rifle or two that did nothing but jam, I can't say I've had a disappointing rimfire rifle.

I love my 10-22.
Having said that I have an old Winchester tube fed that shoots straight as an arrow.
Having said that, get a lever action they are a ton of fun! As per this forum's recommendation, I'm jones'n for a Win 94/22...Next gun.

another vote for the marlin 795

add a scope, maybe a swivel bipod, nothing else needed.
great little gun. if/when I wear this one out I'll buy another

CZ 452 Trainer. Affordable, accurate, terrific iron sights. With a sling, decent rimfire scope, and quick release rings, it'd be an outstanding all-arounder.

I get so sick of hearing that you have to drop $1000 to get an accurate 10/22. The original stock 10/22 carbine is not meant to be a tack driver. Ruger does make far more accurate 10/22 models.

Ruger sells the 10/22 Target or 10/22 Tactical(heavy barrel and target trigger). They are VERY accurate.

The 10/22 Tactical can be had for ~$425 and the 10/22 Target can be had for ~$400. That's a lot less than $1000. They are also as accurate as a CZ 45x or a Savage bolt action .22LR.

Not sure they are as accurate but they tend to be close. My 10-22 has seen a $10 GM second's barrel, a new hammer, and a boyds stock, all total coming in around $350. It doesn't quite shoot like either my Savage or my CZs, but it's not far off and, depending on the purpose, sometimes more fun. More of different strokes for different folks.

get a 10/22.

you pay more but you can do more if you ever decide to down the road.

they are most definitely the ar15's of the 22lr world.

Another vote for the Savage Mk.II - they make them in so many configurations, you're bound to find one you really like. I got the Mk. II - TR, my kids LOVE it.

My favorites for a frugal buyer.... Savage Mark II (with Accu-trigger), and Marlin Model 60 for a semi-auto. I would include the Ruger 10/22 tactical as a vaible option.

The CZ 452/453/455 is the next step up in grade from the Savage. But many Savages will shoot just as well. Yeah, I think the Savage Mark II is a great cost effective choice. I have the walnut stocked version which is priced about the same as the CZ. The CZ 452 Trainer is the lowest cost CZ unless you go with the youth rifle. The trainer has very good factory sights on it if that is important to you.

The next step above that is probably the Weatherby Mark XXII (bolt), but many CZ's will shoot just as well.

Above that in cost, you are getting into the $1000 price area and the Remington 547 is a good choice in this price range. You can often buy a lower end Anshutz for about this price. The higher grade ones will run you $1500-$1800 new.

Any of the CZ 452 rifles. I have a 452 American and it's my favorite rifle. I installed an Eric Brooks trigger kit and it's got a beautifully crisp 2lb trigger.
