I have a Mossberg 500 pump and 930 semi-auto. Shot a whole bunch of different ammo through both of them, slugs, buck and birdshot. Got Winchester super target on sale at Dicks and had the following issues...

The 500 would have to be racked with authority to get the case expelled. At first I though it was stuck and butt-strocked it, then did a hard eject.

The 930 would not cycle at all, needed to use the charge handle to manually eject each case.

Is this just a totally underpowered round? I have use Federal target bird shot and never had these issues.

Anything to do with high/low brass?

It has to do with the Winchester steel heads, they expand to fit the chamber, then will not contract after firing. And you get a stuck shell

For some reason Winchester use's a grade of steel that's not good for shotgun shells.

No problem with the Remington Gun Club's.

The cheap Winchester promo shells, Universal and Super Target are great for practicing failure drills. If your gun will cycle those, it will cycle darn near anything. My Mossberg 930, and Winchester 12 will cycle them fine, but they are noticeably sticky in my wifes 500, and I needed to pop the empties out of my Beretta 686 with a rod.
I stick to Remington Gun Club or Sport Loads for cheap shells, because I like the hulls for reloading. If you are tossing your hulls, Federal, Rio, Estate, or Nobel shells work fine for about the same price as the junk Winchesters.

^ My 500 cycles the Universals OK at best. I dont dare try them in my Light Twelve. What blows my mind is the local walmart here has 100 rd Universals for $26 something and 100 rd Federals for $19 something. Only two boxes of the Federals left for obvious reasons.

You are lucky, the Wally World promo packs of any brand have been nearing $30 here for the last several years. I can buy better ammo and cheaper even at Gander, let alone on line from Cabelas.

My 500 has problems with Winchester's stuff, but my Winchester doesn't. hmmm. I've used steel wool on the chamber of that 500 to no avail. I switched to Kent Fasteel. This is steel shot stuff I was shooting, the Winchester Hi Speed. But, same problems as you have with the promotional loads. My old Winchester 1400 eats that Winchester promo stuff like candy, comes back for more. But, I've had friends with other shotguns, 870s in particular, that hated the Winchester promo stuff. So, it is a problem with the ammo like everyone says.

I dove hunt with a SxS double with extractors. This avoids cheap ammo problems. :D

For trap league, I've shot lots of different ammo. Some brands are a bit sticky in my pump even though I've had it honed. Obviously, I prefer the ones that aren't as hard to eject but given the usage, it's not that big of a deal. For me the inspexpensive Winchester shells are a problem.
