If you are really as tight on cash as you say, get a Makarov. Cheap, reliable, small, and powerful enough for self-defense. Also consider the Star BM 9mm pistol. Both of these guns are less than $200 (more like $120-$150 if you can get them transferred from an FFL), bombproof, and well worth the money.

I use 124 gr. standard pressure Gold Dots in my CZ-75B.
