Got back from the shooting range today with my new Wasr10/63 - very happy with the purchase. We were shooting assorted surplus ammo at 50 yards and noticed a fairly steady pattern, although the iron sights all seemed to be aiming high. I only have 60-70 rounds through the weapon myself and only 40 or so I was paying any attention to the spreads. We probably put 200 through it today total. I think it was a good first day break in, although I did notice the gun was "sweating" alot of fluid - looked like oil coming out from the receiver and collecting especially around the dust cover etc. When I bought the gun I took it all apart, cleaned and re-oiled it. Im wondering if this is just a combination of the packing grease and gun oil getting worked through it.

Anyway Im going to order some surplus online and plan to go back shooting sometime soon. Im debating putting a scope on it or red dot, but I think I'm leaning toward the red dot with a UTG rail system on the front. Seems more AKish

They've got rails on the side for good Russian optics.

The aforementioned Russian optics are built like tanks.

Get yourself a PK series dot sight and have fun with it

Your right, my wasr has the side rail mount on it but the real eastern eurpean sights Ive found to be very expensive and hard to come by. There is a website online that specializes in making/importing PSO's but they are crazy expensive, like twice the cost of an EOtech.

the ultimak rail with a mircro t-1 or eotech or other quality optic would be a good choice. the ultimak is gonna be more solid and be the most rugged between it and the larue mount. imho of course.

I vastly prefer the Ultimak over the UTG or siderail systems (and yes - I have all three). If you use the side rail, the Tantal BP02 mount is a good choice. I recently sold my Kobra sight and the last of my BP02s in favor of various Aimpoint variants on Ultimak mounts.

The siderail mounts flex the sidewall of the receiver too much for my taste, and the UTG (while cheaper) is not as solid as the Ultimak.

The Larue red dot/mount is interesting looking; I may try that next on my SAR3 project.

This is what I did with mine. Yeah, it's an expensive red dot, but I've learned over the years that being cheap cost more in the long-run than buying quality outright. Also this is the milled reciever Bulgarian SLR-95, not your average AK, this thing is accurate, so adding the optic merely enhanced an already effective carbine. I like the Aimpoint T-1 or H-1 for their small size, but they are 4moa and were a little costly for me. The CompC3 I have mounted here is bigger and bulkier, but it's size really belies its weight. Also the Ultimak rail cost $100, but it is a rock solid mount. So you'll have close to $500 for this setup.
I have considered the AK-IronDot LaRue offers for $285, but of course after I had already purchased and installed the Ultimak/Aimpoint. I just might get it anyway to see how it functions. I do like the compactness of it over the Aimpoint setup I have now.

Last night I ordered my set up,

UTG front rail system w/covers
UTG Foregrip (with pressure switch)
NcStar red dot reflex with multi reticle
CO tactical flashlight with strobe/pressure switch

My reasons: Get the wood furniture off the front of the gun. I like the wood stock but not the front - on my ak it looked cheap and didnt line up the same on both sides. Ive used my friends AK underfolder with the UTG and loved it. The NcStar red dot has excellent reviews for the price, AK users have said it holds zero even after several hundred rounds. The CO-flashlight is a quality piece that I can use for home defence as well as lights out situation. I considered an infrared set up with a special scope but now we're talkin dough.

What I expect: An affordable set up that can be used accurately up to 100 yards as well as home defence. If all else fails the red dot, flash light and fore grip can be reused on another gun and the UTG can be resold or kept for future AK's.
