My fishing buddy, and long time friend was pretty ignorant about guns and gun ownership. A "closet anti" if you will.
When I first told him a few months back that I wanted a gun, his first question was, "What do you need a gun for?" When I first started complaining to him about how long the process in NJ is to obtain FID and purchase permits, his response was "It should take 6 months, if not longer to obtain said permits, you can't be too careful."
In both, and other, occasions I raised an eyebrow, and snapped at him ever so gently, answering his questions and rebutting his arguments in the rational manner many of us do. Most of the time the conversations ended with my stating of the facts, and his sometimes ignoring the facts, and sometimes reluctantly accepting them as truths.
So today, we're out driving to get our fishing licenses and boat permits, and our conversation eventually led to firearms. I was talking about the possibility of CCW in NJ, and how you can get a permit in NYS, but not NYC, etc.
As he works in Manhattan, he replies, "Well I wouldn't be comfortable being around a bunch of people legally carrying guns in NYC."
Just as I had in the past I prepared to snap; I raised my eyebrow, opened my mouth to take a breath to speak, and before I could snap at him, he continued, "You know, I'm much more comfortable with just criminals having the guns, us non-criminals should be disadvantaged, you know... Make it easier for the muggers."
He then raised his eyebrow towards me, and put on a slanted smirk. My mouth hung open, I was in shock. Had he just used a witty sarcastic comment to support CCW, in NYC no less?
It took me a few seconds to check and double check my short term memory to confirm I was indeed hearing and seeing what I had just heard and seen. I scoured the comment, looking for some secret anti double speak. When I didn't find it I lowered my eyebrow, closed my mouth, put on a slanted smirk and said, "exactly!"
Just wanted to share that story with you folks, as it made my day.
