Four Guns Only: For Real

If I were restricted to 4 guns I'd have an 12 ga 870, a 1911 in 45acp (with a top end conversion kit - which shouldn't count toward the 4), a Ruger 10/22 and a quality 30-06 scoped rifle.

a friend of mine once told me...

that all you really need is a 12 gauge, a 22 rifle, and a 30 caliber bolt rifle (his choice is 30.06, mine is .308). That leaves you one more choice. Make mine a P7, but I can't argue with the guys who say 1911 or S&W 357--I like (and own) both.

Of course, to me, it's just four more reasons to stay away from NYC--I've lived in the greater (and I use the term advisedly) SF, LA, and Chicago metropolitan areas in the last 15 years so I've seen enough well-intentioned and ill-executed laws to last a lifetime.

I'll second the guy who said "move to Westchester County", but that's not your only option. Plenty of folks live in CT (where I grew up) and commute--much more reasonable laws regarding carry and ownership). Plenty of other NY areas where reasonable people live, and reasonable laws exist (coincidence?). Do some homework, and let us know how it works out.

Best of luck, Rich

Hmmm...

Ordinarily, a good slide-action shotgun in 12 ga would be on the list. Lotsa folks prefer the 870, though I confess I'm partial to the 500.

How about:
good bolt-action '06 (I would say get a nice Mauser/03, but not everyone can get that lucky, I reckon);
1911 (look into ammo selection if you're concerned about stopping anything large; shoulder-stabilized hardball will penetrate 40", IIRC);
good .22 rifle. 10/22 or such if you're a plinker, a good bolt action if you're more a deliberate type. You could go instead for a nice .22 pistol (Mark II, Browning Buckmark, etc), if you prefer them.

Two of these weapons are very definitely sports-oriented, and that's fine. Your guns should fit YOUR needs and activities. If you had these weapons, though, you might also want a final choice that could both be used effectively for hunting, and was quite capable for defensive use at close range. That choice could very well be the Saiga-12 Shotgun (see Larry Corriea's article re this in the latest SWAT mag).

In your situation, I reckon I'd go for something like:
Glock 19 or 23, or Kahr P9;
CZ 452;
Mossberg 500 Ghost Ring;
Customized 1903.

Another perfectly valid set of choices could be:
Good lever action- I prefer Marlin- in .30-30, .35 Rem, .44 Mag, or .45-70;
Browning BL-22 .22 rifle;
S&W 4" L-frame (.357 would be one fine choice);
Marlin .410.

:)

Paco, I just got my .308 enfield after christmas and I havent had a chance to clean it up and go shooting. I bought one that had already been sporterized with the barrel cut to 22inchs, william flip up sights and a sporter stock. The gun handles real well, and if it shoots as nice as Im hoping I would like to get a second and leave it bonestock.

If your not partial to slide operated shotguns, the 1100 is a great semi that I hope to own one day. I have two 870's now and I love them both. Any of the big 4 pumps will serve you well, take a browse in the shotgun forum for other ideas on popular shotguns. With any of them practice is the key, the weapon is the smallest part.

If you are allowed 4 pistols this would be my list:
BHP 9mm with .22 conversion kit
1911 Commander .45 with .22 conversion kit -
S&W K-frame or GP100 of your choice in .357 magnum if allowed and .38 special if not.
S&W 642 J-frame in .38 special or .32 magnum(if you want to have a different caliber in the mix) - backup piece when traveling or primary in dress clothes.
That gives you .357, .38, 9mm, .45, two .22s and maybe .32 if you want a different j-frame.
Shotgun - I prefer 870, 1100 competition if you want semi - the do everything gun.
Rifle - .308 or 30-06 - Scout .308(Steyr, enfield or mauser conversion); m1 garand(.308 or 30-06), mauser (8mm for cheapness, .308 for easier logistics)

:) SAPPER LEADER GET'S THE GOLD! :)
-I think this is gonna be my list if it's the 4 pistols, 2 longarms thing.

-I'll go for a 1911, 340pd, 870, and possibly a garand if it's the 4 gun thing.

-For everyone else: thank you for the advice.
-For those who think I should move: not happening anytime soon, besides, it's the priciple of the place. Maybe I can help change the beast from the inside. Trying to do some good here.

-Paco

Paco,

Why choose at all? The correct choice is to leave NYC and go somewhere else. NYC is a police state unto itself. Get out while you still can.
