FiveseveN Range Report

Wow...thank goodness we only sell these things...

The gun was designed as a companiion sidearm for the P90...the hope was that departments would adopt the p90 and then for "uniformity" would pick up the pistol as the sidearm.

Since the p90 has not enjoyed the success that was predicted/hoped....the five senven hasn't either...they are sort of a package deal.

Does FN care if you buy them or not (as a civilian) probably not...their focus is mostly military and police....if you hadn't noticed that yet.

The civilian rounds although not armor defeating by their design are by their nature. It's like asking if 5.56 is armor defeating by design. The nominal caliber of the five seven will do the kind of dammage to a soft armored vest to make it fairly useless to even wear.

The light weight of the bullet and high velocity in a pistol configuration make it not that usefull for long range shooting (2 acres) was a "distance" given. The light weight of the round makes it shed energy very quickly...and the sights make it very poor for any distance work at all.

Even it's brother subgun in't that great at over 100 meters...granted we only have a couple and have a 5 meter to 800 meter range to test on...but hey...what do I know...

For ammo I would suggest seeking out the folks at CMMGINC.com
They move TONS of that stuff and get good prices on it

Sounds like a Grendel P-30 (30 rds/.22mag) on steroids...
From what I heard the Grendel was hit or miss for function, where the Five-Seven goes bang (or zip) with every trigger pull.

At least someone is trying to come up with new ideas! Overall its a good concept: higher capacity, lighterweight, minimal recoil etc. Hopefully, as times goes on they will standardize on the caliber, interest grows and we see alot more cool stuff like reloading components. The gun itself is nice design and somewhat forward thinking: for a big gun it is lightweight, reasonably thin, and erognomic.

They had one of these FN pistols at CDNN for $699. I wish that I would have bought one!! Thanks for the great report I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on your new gun. By the way how much would 1000 round of 5.7 cost??

I never said it was a one trick pony

But like Light Beer (Tastes Great AND Less Filling)

I have seen most proponents saying it has penetration AND that it is the unltimate in stopping power as well

There is simply not a large enough sample size to derive any answers from street performance so we are left with Gelatin testing.

Where it has performed poorly

I totally agree with the minimal recoil and mag capacity statements....you just don't hear that stressed from those that are shouting FN propaganda and marketing at the top of their lungs.

So since putting multiple rounds on target quickly is job 1...

It might be A Answer...just not THE answer

At least not for everyone

Like me...I don't care how flat it shoots, I am simply not gonna assume I can hit something 100 (or more) yds away with a handgun.

That is not a defensive distance

Now...If I decide I want a 20 shot 22mag pistol...I may buy one

For its' obvious advantages...not the magical ones

:D

Obiwan,

OK. I agree completly about the long range defensive shooting. I just can't see when I would shoot humans that far away with a handgun. However, it's very fun to pull the FiveseveN out at the rifle range and pepper targets at 75yards. But it's not that much of a defensive virture.

Plus, my 5.7 failed the iron sink test completly. Never heard of the iron sink test? This is where you shoot an old iron sink at your junk yard from 25yds with a 5.7 and .45ACP (230 grain) to see who makes dents and who makes holes. The .45 made nice holes while the 5.7 meerly converted the porcilin into tiny shards and discolored the iorn.

You are also right that the most relivant virture here is multiple shot recovery (too me). How that stacks up against other factors is for each shooter to decide. Why FN does not market this more, I don't know. Maybe they don't want to run afoul of the "recoil=macho" crowd?

sturmruger,
As for ammo, if really CDNN delivers 2100 rounds free shipping, that would be the best price I've seen. If you olny want 1000, ammoman may be the best sourse. Check thier latest prices online. It's all high. I guess that keeps the riff-raff away....

Yojinbo, I didn't bother to read all the posts here so did you ever get your Blade-Tech holster??

At the risk of hijacking the thread, I would really like to see someone put a scope on this pistol and use it for for Prairie Dogs.

Sounds like fun to me.

Did anyone notice the AR15.com thread's (hopefully unintentional) tastelessness of having the cover of the phone book have Arlington PD's pictures on the front?

Onmilo,

I did get my rig from bladetech and I could not be more pleased. The gun plus the hoslter don't weigh much more them my Moto T900 pager - so I never even notice the load.

Dave R,,

Don't worry about hijacking, I'm not sure we knew were the tread was going in the first place.

I can see the beady little eyes of the p. dogs every time I pick up one of these rounds. A few options:

1. Check out rhinelandarms.com (mentioned before). They are working on some kind of carbine.

2. In thoery, FN is making a civilian P90 that SHOULD have a sight rail. You can 'pre-order' this vapor-gun from impact today.

With these on the horizon, I am in no hurry to put a scope on mine. If I WAS going to try this I would:

Rig a 2-arm aluminum hood out of the recycled back armor shroud of a BLITS mount from CDNN. I would mount this over the reciever after freeing it from the STANAG block and affix to the front 1913 mount backward (upsidedown really) - cutting away a lot of metal on the right hand side to allow the proper ejection of brass. Then, afix a scope by tapping the shroud and mount a scope as far back as possible. A little 4x fixed would work (or that nice Hensoldt made for the BLITS would work too...). This is pure theory, mind you.

mons meg,

Some people (cough, cough) have the bulk to hide an entire tape drive on thier right hip. No names (cough, cough), just some people in general.

Al Thompson,

I just looked at the mechtechsys website. That would be kind of neat. You would think the FiveseveN with 20 rounds would be appealing to them.

I'm not ready to start linking to mfgs yet (new guy), but take a look at thier CCU flyer link (bottom of the home page) for an overview. I can see the FN in there.

Let's face it, my IOM can't get any more ugly then it is today.

I noticed mention of online retailers with 20rd. magazines available. Regretfully the Five-seveN I picked up came with the pre-ban 10 rounders and I would like to upgrade to full mags.

If someone has resources and could post these, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you could also strap it to your knee and go for that special "Torgo" look.
