I am in Florida for the holiday in Brooksville, not too far from Tampa. Anyone have any good gun shop suggestion for me while I'm down here? Thanks.

Gun Shops in Tampa Area

I'm not familiar with any of the shops in the Pasco or Hernando county areas, but there are a few. I think there is one called SOS in New Port Richey/Hudson which has a range, and there is DOW Gunworks in Dade City/Lacoochee on US 301.

In Tampa, which I am more familiar with, there are a few that are come to mind. Central Firearms and Public Safety Supply (police supply store), which is down by Raymond James Stadium on Osborne Ave, just off Dale Mabry Hwy, Jack's Guns (small shop) on Waters Ave, about 1/2 mile west of Dale Mabry Hwy, and University Gun and Pawn (which has the best selection of these three) on Fletcher Ave at 15th St, just west of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. There is also Florida Firearms, which I think is now on Nebraska Ave.. Sadly, a couple of Tampa shops have closed relatively recently: Discount Guns on Busch, and my favorite by far, Sonny's Gun Shop which stocked just about everything as far as new guns, and had tons of old miscellaneous "stuff" and a fantasy/unusual/antique bookstore that was fun to rummage through.

In Pinellas Park, there is Bill Jackson's, which is a nice store for all (and I do mean all) outdoor activities, and has quite the firearm selection and an indoor range. And Castle Keep Firearms in Clearwater.

I am sure there are others that I am overlooking or forgetting, and plenty I don't know about, but I hope this information helps get you started!

Enjoy. STEVE

I you're headed down US 19 toward Clearwater, about a half mile past Curlew look of a small gun shop on the west side of the street called Gun City. Orville owns the shop and if you're in the market for any kind of handgun, he'll give you a pretty decent deal. Does a HUGE amount of LE business.

A little further up north on the east side of US 19 there's Take Aim gunstore a little south of Tarpon Springs road. As far as Pinellas County, they're probably the most knowlegeable staff I've come across and have a really good selection of just about everything. 3/4 of the shop is a gun store and 1/4 of the shop is for Safes.

Those would probably be the closest to you if you decide to come to Pinellas County rather than Hillsborough.

There is a store called Old Time Gun Shop in Hudson on SR52 about 1/4-1/2 mile east of Little Road. Very nice selection (new and used) at reasonable prices. I bought my last pistol there.

Gun stores in FLA

If you are looking for Military surplus Bruce Dow's place on 301 is the closest to Brooksville. Cole's in Clearwater is another good place to visit.

the Eagle Trading post on 19 in Brooksville...Ken Stewart? Is it still there?

What's the name of Bruce Dow's store? I didn't find it.

My review of some local shops:

Kastle Keep Guns (Clearwater) - Ulmerton Road

- Good to great inventory.
- Okay to good prices.
- Willing to work a deal (haggle).
- Ask for Andy.

Take Aim Guns (Palm Harbor) - US 19N

- Great inventory.
- Fair to good prices.
- Willing to work a deal (haggle) to an extent.
- Ask for Jack.

Deer Hunter Guns (Clearwater) - S.R. 60

- Fair to okay inventory.
- Okay to good prices.

Bill Jacksons (Pinallas Park) - US 19S

- Okay to good inventory.
- Poor to fair prices.
- Awful range.

Gun City (Palm Harbor/Clearwater) - US 19N

- Fair to poor inventory (never seen so many hi points and lorcins in one place at one time).
- Poor to fair prices.

Coles Gun Shop (Dunedin) - Sort of near Morton Mease Hospital.

- Fair inventory.
- Fair to poor prices.
- Shop smells bad.

Knights Shooting Sports (Clearwater/Pinallas Park) - US 19S

- Great to excellent inventory.
- Poor to very poor prices.
- Poor staff.
- Great range (although *very* overpriced).

There used to be (1992) a place in Sarasota called either the Pistol Palace or Pistol Parlor. It was a pretty well stocked store. Don't remember where it was located though.
