FL Permit - mild rant

Several people here have posted (OK, bragged) about getting their Florida permits in around 40-45 days. I checked the status of my application, and they're planning to issue on 24 April. I sent the packet on the 31st of December! Of course, in their defense, a notice came in mid-January telling me that another signature was needed on one of the certificates I included for proof of training. Naturally, it came on a Friday, so I couldn't respond 'til Monday...

Now, the FBI is holding up the show by dragging their feet with the fingerprint check.

Come 24 April, the Department of Licensing will go ahead and issue the permit even if the feebs haven't yet finished. The 90 days is officially up on that day. It *may* (yeah, right) happen sooner if the report *does* come back.

Meanwhile, I'm bummin'. I have a trip scheduled for early May to Texas, and wanted to be able to tote my hardware. If I get the OK on 4/24, it might still take a few days for the print run, then a few more to mail it to me (Minnesota). It could be close.

Shoulda sent the app sooner, I guess.

The Feebs might be a bit snowed under right now.

Heck, even Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme are reporting first-quarter losses. ;)

I just called them at 850-488-5381. They ask for your SSN, and in a few seconds you have your status. 'Tis 'way' easy. The people there are nice to deal with.

Mine took exactly 45 days from the day I mailed the form until the day I received the license. Of course, that was in 1987. :) I received the 4,499th license issued under the new law.

Fortunately, they have extended the license to 5 years and dropped the requirement for fingerprints for renewal.

Either you look suspicious or perhaps it has something to do with 9/11. :) Last time I renewed mine, in 1999, it took about as long as it would take to print the license and laminate the photo.
 
Yes, you should have applied sooner and you should have applied with all the required information - but these things happen.

I think where the biggest error is that your chickens were counted before they hatched in expecting to get your permit way too close to when you will be traveling.

I am not sure why you think the FBI is dragging their feet on this matter. It is quite possible that by the time you applied, they were already swamped with other duties and permits. These last few months have hardly been months filled with free time for those folks.

As I understand it, Florida has 90 days to do your permit. If they are like Texas, the starting date it the date when they received ALL of the materials required. So your notice that you were lacking materials came on Friday, 17 January? Then you mailed in the required information on 20 January and they probably did not get the new information and get it put with your application until 24 January and so that is when your 90 day countdown would begin. As such, they will issue you the permit by 24 April, ~90 later, even if the fingerprints have not been verified yet.

That all sounds perfectly proper. It really is sort of hard to rant on the process and the FBI when they are promising you a permit by the end of the 90 days they have to investigate you. Sure, some people have probably gotten theirs faster, but that isn't relevant. Until the deadline passes and you don't have your permit yet, then you have no real reason to complain as you are not being mistreated.
 
I sent my paperwork in on December 8, they got it on December 11th. I got my permit midway/towards the end of Feb. You also sent yours in while the licensing agency was being changed. You sent it in to the Department of State Division of Licensing. It will come to you from the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Products Department of Licensing. :) I also got double-screwed because I sent mine in around Christmas time. Oh well.

Shouldn't have anything to due with 9-11, my last renewal was in 3/2000.

I usually get the renewal packet right after christmas, and the state is notoriously slow during the new year time frame.

Thing is that I have about six sets of fingerprint cards on file with FDLE, and I'm employed by a state LE agency.

FWIW it's taken the same time frame for several co-workers.
 
I just sent my package in today. Guess I'll be waiting a while:mad:
