For those of you with young children, where do you keep your gun(s)?

in the top of the closet.

Just so I can make my voice heard to any young parents who may be listening, there is no such thing as "out of reach" in regards to children. Don't make that mistake. Once they are old enough to walk, they are old enough to climb. Once they are old enough to climb, they are old enough (and smart enough) to move and stack objects in order to climb higher.

"Top of the closet" was inaccessible for a two year old.

Years later the children were simply taught what guns can do, to never ever touch one of mine, and if they were ever visiting a friend who displayed a gun, to leave immediately.

You're right in that there is no such thing as "out of reach" in regards to children. They've got to be impressed with the destructive power of a firearm and taught to leave them alone unless with dad.

I took them shooting often and taught them safe gun handling (so that if they were handling a firearm against my wishes) they would at least know what to do and what not to do.

Unless you keep all of your firearms in a high quality safe, your kids are going to find them. That would necessitate not having an emergency/SD firearm available. That's not an option.
