for want of a lever gun

Thomis;

Yup, lever's are cool, no wonder you want one. My read is a .22 rimfire in either of two platforms. If there are real budget restrictions, then a Henry. However, if you can find a Marlin model 39 in good clean condition, in any of it's many iterations, grab it!

First, the future of the model 39 seems to be in doubt since the Ogres of Ilion, Cerberus, etc. aquired Marlin. Second, this is a gun that you can be sure will outlast your lifetime, and given good care, your immediate heirs lifespans too. Look to the Model 39 club thread here in the THR rifles section for more information.

Goblin;

The Marlin model 60 is a tube-fed semi-auto. You may be thinking of the models 56 and 57, which were the removable clip and tube-fed lever guns respectively available in the 60's and maybe part of the 70's.

Another vote for the Henry .22. I own one and it's a great gun. Smooth as greased snake **** :)

I also own a very lightly used 336. It's a good gun for carry/brush work.

For plinking, shooting, enjoyment of it....I don't see how you can beat a good 22 though. My sister has a Winchester and we both prefer the Henry over it any day of the week...damn good gun for the money.
