Howdy Yall!

I've tried doing a little searching, but honestly, even if I found 15 articles on the web that answer my questions, I know that my THR brethren would have some additional wisdom that is worth reading. I’ll to keep this from getting too long (but I don’t think I was successful there.) Some of my terminology might be off, but I think you’ll pick up what I’m trying to lay down

I desire a pair of SBS, and I have one of the 2 donor guns that I require. ideally, I’d like to be able to switch between a regular stock and pistol grip. I haven’t decided if I’m going to make a detachable system like Lee Van Cleef had in ‘For A Few Dollars More’ or just buy an extra stock for each one so I can swap them out as desired. This brings up a few questions.

A - when I fill out the form 1, I assume I fill out the OAL as when the pistol/birds head grip is attatched, as that would be the shorter?
A.2 - can I just use the OAL with no grip/stock attached and then use whatever stock, PG, birds head/shockwave grip I want without any issues???

2 - is there anything extra I’d have to fill out or document if I plan on switching out a dedicated pistol grip with a regular stock? Are there any considerations/problems if I make it compatible with screw in choke tubes, and end up using a tube that increases the OAL?

C - if I start out with a pistol grip, can I later add either a factory stock, or a Lee Van Cleef modular set up without filling out any paperwork (I figure it’s going to take a while for me to figure out how to design and build the modular system but I at least want to start out with a birds head/ shockwave or pistol grip set up.)

Bonus Question: chances are neither of these will happen, but as long as I’m posting I might as well ask: if I end up putting a sub-gauge-adapter in or a different barrel(s) which give me 18+ inches of barrel length and 26+” OAL, does that mess with my tax stamp? Can I then take the gun across state lanes without ATF approval/notification into NFA unfriendly states, provided I leave the other parts at home (I assume that a sub gauge adapter changing the barrel length means absolutely nothing to the ATF/NFA).

I really appreciate all your help. Even if the answer I get back is “you can only decide how the gun will be set up once, and you must find a way to live with that” I’m ok with that, I just want to make sure I stay out of Club Fed, and don’t screw up any options I might have down the road.

thank you,

Once the gun is registered as a SBS, you can change how it is set up as much as you want, as long as you have the ability to return it to the registered configuration. So you can swap out stocks and barrels as much as you want. I highly recommend you plan on having a stock on the gun mainly because outside of some very limited uses (like door breaching) a PGO shotgun is almost useless.

If a SBS is put into a configuration so that it is in a title 1 configuration (ie it no longer meets the definition of SBS - has an 18” barrel, OAL > 26”, stock, etc) then it is no longer under the purview of the NFA. So you can take the gun across state lines without filling out the notification form. Once you get back home, you can put it back into NFA configuration with no issues.

A sub gauge adapter doesn’t mess with anything, but I can’t speak to what happens if you use an adapter that allows you to fire pistol/rifle cartridges.

Don't bother with the pistol grip. Been there, done that.
Once you put the 18 and up barrel on and make it longer than 28, the atf doesn't care about it. Even though I don't like the pistol grip at all, now I have to keep it because that's how it's registered.

You fill out the OAL and bbl length of the gun you will make.

No. You need to follow the instructions. Pick one and use the appropriate measurement.

No.

No.

Yes

No.

If its not in an NFA configuration, its not an NFA firearm.

(I assume that a sub gauge adapter changing the barrel length means absolutely nothing to the ATF/NFA).
It doesn't.

ATF requests that you notify them of any permanent changes, but no regulation requires it.
