i took it down and cleaned it up real good, we may take this one shooting also if we find the time to go.

thoughts and opinions?

I've got the same rifle, bought it at a garage sale about 13 years ago. Dated 1963..... It's pretty accuarate too

My grandpa has one of those that he used to hunt squirrels in his younger days. He's spoken a lot about what a fellow used to be able to do with just a set of iron sights! Now it gets used has a "hog rifle" on my mother's family's pig farm.

'Bubba' would put a scope and camo Krylon paint job on it.Generally considered pretty barfy in classic old firearms circles.

kinda figured it was something like that.

i wouldnt change a thing on it. :)

one last question, i was looking through my stash of 22 ammo, and found some "standard velocity" 22 LR, some "high velocity" 22LR, and i have some sub sonic's also.

this rifle, says on the side of the barrel, ".22 short, long, or long rifle"

can i use 'modern' (eg high velocity) in this thing? or should i stick with 'standard velocity'?

The rifle will be safe with any modern .22 short, long or long rifle cartridge. In most cases, standard velocity will give the best accuracy but high/hyper velocity cartridges will work just fine.

I love it when they turn all plumb colored. the prob with the hi velocity ammo is this; the rifle was proly made before the advent of hi vels. so your sights may not compensate correctly for the extra speed, no matter how low you set the rear site. I have a pre ww2 marlin, with a peep site, that with hi vels, still hits 5 inches high at 50 yds, even with the peeper set all the way down.
try some CCI hi velocity short, hollow points. they are still around 1000fps, and will give you great accuracy through those old bbls.

The first hi velocity .22 ammo was the Stinger. That came out a long time ago, and it made a big splash when it did, but I never shoot the stuff. I'd rather shoot a heavier bullet.

I'd say it was an early 70's invention.
