"Friendly Looking" Long Gun?

I live in the Kollective too. It's a bit insane out here. But, it's also where we live. Since I grew up on a ranch here, carrying was no big deal. Now it is, but we are approaching 30M folks here and a lot of them live close together.

You need a concealed carry permit and you need to carry without it showing. Anything else is literally showing off. Why? What reason do you have to let the others know you are armed? It gets you nowhere. If you are being accosted, the best surprise is pulling a piece they didn't know you had. If in a peaceful crowd, why get them all on edge?

If you want to "show off" I'm with some of the others - get a "John Wayne" rifle (Win 92) in blue and wood and show it off, especially if it's a real antique that warrants oohing and ahhing over :)

I agree with you about the showing off/open carry thing. I know it is important to fight the good fight in any way possible, but I would not want anybody but my immediate company knowing I was armed. I am in orange county so a concealed carry permit is not even an option. I do carry unloaded and locked up inside a day pack when I'm out and about just in case. But wearing a visible side arm or slinging a rifle down on main street is asking for extra attention and possibly trouble.

this looks friendly... ;)

Conforming to a perception (in this case that black rifles are only for bad guys and good people carry other things) only reinforces it in my opinion. Going against the grain is much harder, but the effects are far greater lasting. If you conduct yourself as a respectable citizen, it will not matter to those with opn minds what you carry. Afterall, the clothes do not make the man.

I would probably call the police if I saw a man with a rifle walking down my street.

Of course, you could always carry a Hi-Point 9mm pistol; Everyone would mistake it for a battery operated drill. :D

Non threatening long arm? . . . possibly classic sxs 12g carried unloaded and broken in the crook of your arm or held by the barrels with the stock over your sholder but some people freak out is they see any gun.

Off topic, sorry.

What? Another Anti-gun law in KA? When are the gun owners in California going to take their State back? For pity sake, MOVE or get control of your state into more constitutional friendly hands. Keep rationalizing your rights away! It won't be long before they ban them outright in that miserable excuse for a State.

HKGuns,

If you are really interested in knowing what is going on here in CA you should check out Calguns.net. We have several fronts going on right now that are active court cases. Open Carry is one of these strategies to force CCW or LTC as they now say at Calguns. This is the most aggressive we have ever been with the state and looks like we will get some pretty big wins. Most of us don't like to quit and can't move, so all we can do is fight the machine.

I will do that Matt. Thanks. The garbage going on there is bad for everyone in this Country who respect the constitution. Sorry for the off topic foray folks. Please don't let this degenerate into a Political thread.

Just for fun, I think people should start open carrying drills that are small enough to fit in a holster. Give the Police some headaches over power tools.

External perception is a whole lot different than internal reality when it comes to the RKBA in California. As ECVMatt indicates, there are a lot of heavy brawls going on in the courts right now with the big gun legal eagles biffing it out. The Calguns site lays it out pretty good, our side has our dukes up and the other side is backing up slowly. As I see it, RKBA is being extremely well respresented in the legal sector with knowledge, organization and tactics that are highly motivated and first rate.

Actually it is pretty close to the truth. While there certainly are counties in California that are effectively ‘shall issue’, most Californians live in counties where they cannot get a CCW unless they are politically connected. So the suggestion to ‘get your CCW’ is not very helpful.

You'all stay in your states and we'll do what we have to in Cali. Since the US Govt owns just at 50% of the land mass of Cali (USFS, BLM NPS, and Military) - if we can replace a couple of anti-gun senators we may be able to bring some change? In any case, I believe it is still legal to open carry if your side arm is a back-up while hunting (with license and tags for the Zone you drew), or hand gun hunting out right. And that can go on, on a lot of the above mentioned federal lands.

These issues are mostly related to urban and suburban areas with Sheriffs who will not issue CCW permits and cities that won't allow it in the city limits anyway. Since the whole of the legislature, courts and governors office are all controlled by the Dems, a lot of the sheriffs are either currying favor with them, or are Dems too (read leaning anti-gun).

Balance is not something we have right now. Balance is a long way away. But, we'll see how this goes? Better you'all watch from the sidelines than try to get into the fight. And for a lot of us, moving ain't an option (family, land, jobs, etc.) - although my cousin did move to Wyo :)

But, even if you think about that (?), there's a state with maybe the population of the SF Bay Area. I still say it's about density and the politicians fear of an armed conflict between civilians like WATTs on steroids.

You are taking my comment completely out of context. Please re-read post #25 again to see what I actually said.

I live it Ca. I hate the laws. I am a Life member of the NRA but the open carry craze is lost on me. I am not going to sling a long gun and push a cart through Wal Mart to make a point. IF I carry ANYTHING, there will be NOTHING open about it.

One of the biggest internet gun forum fantasies/myths has to be that walking around in public with a long gun will be OK as long as it is just a lever action with a wood stock. What are you people smoking?
