All,

Has anyone noticed that it is impossible to find a high quality DA .22 LR revolver nowadays. I can find all the Taurus, Rossi and NAA .22lrs, but not a single S&W. Even the used ones suck, totall worn out or abused. Plenty of Ruger SS, nice but only so nice.

It is really frustrating. Anybody have a nice .22lr revolver with a 3 or 4" barell they would like to sell me.

Hold out for a nice S&W K-22 Model 18, or on of the 617 variants. They will cost you but they will also last you a lifetime and be worth every penny.

There is a S&W Forum with classifieds; also the various auction sites and some dealers online.

They are out there.

Last year, I stopped by my local gun shop and spotted a S&W Model 17-4. It was blued, 6", original grips, 98%(or better) original finish, very tight and timed perfectly. I asked my friend, the owner, about it . They had just taken it in on a trade and I could take it home for $200.00 OTD. Of course, I did. These fine revolvers are out there. Just keep your eye open and some $ in your pocket. Good luck and good hunting.

there were quite a number of good da 22lr revolvers at the big show up here this weekend - i bought a 6" k22, there was another 6" model 17, there were several colts of various configurations, an airweight s&w (317?), and that's just off the top of my head. generally around or under $400.

ok

maybe my gripe then is with the shops in and around Atlanta. I guess if it isnt a Glock or 1911 it isnt going to sell so why stock it.

Why is it that gun shop owners get pissed when you dont buy from them? It does not seem to sink in that I am not buying from them because they dont carry what I want at this time. I had three guys get miffed at me because I was browsing for a .22lr and not interested in a 686 or hk2000.

I did like the new Taurus Gaucho though.

Consider the mod 617 if you run across one. Sure, it's not a K22 or 17 or 18, but it's really a nice gun. I bought one for my wife off of Gunbroker and she love's it.

In fact when we go to the range loaded down with all our revolvers, we end up spending most the session shooting her 617, cause it's just a nice smooth tack driving .22 DA or SA.

You should be able to find one in good shape.

I guess that's where all the old worn out .22 revolvers go. You have to look long and hard to find a worn out .22 revolver in any store around me.

K-22's

Hello
I agree with majic.. I have NOT seen a worn out K-22. I have seen them with the bluing worn off but the actions are tough as nails. Consider this.. I bought this one, with well worn bluing. It locked up like a vault and I sent it off for a nickel finish as I always wanted one, and could not find one. Now all the sudden I am attracted to WORN out bluing as well.I have LESS in this than most buy a decent looking K-22 for. Some Yum-Yum had refinished it prior to me sending it off and just about buffed the factory trade mark off the frame. The refinisher restamped this trademark for a modest fee. Regards, Hammerdown.

It'll probably take a while but they're out there. Found a S&W 17-3 at my regular dealer after several months. Liked it so much that I bought a 1953 K-22 off of GunsAmerica. Then a 1948 K-22. Then I gave the 17-3 to Derek as partial reimbursement for all the time and money he's sunk into keeping THR up and running. I'd keep an eye out on GunsAmerica and the classified section of the S&W Forum.

K22 1959 Model 18

I found one of these here in Northern, CA last week. Set me back $450 plus fees. Can't complain because it is the only one that has come through the three gun shops that I visit in the last year.

It is nice though, 95% with original diamond insert grips, no box or tools but I don't collect paper so it doesn't bother me that much

Try Autries Armory down in Fayetteville. I am fairly sure I saw a Smith or two in there last week. Good luck!

issue might be resolved

I picked up in a trade a H&R 930 with a 2.5 barrel. It may not be as quality as a SW, but it is the exact size, capacity and barrel length i was looking for. The nickel finish is nice and will take a nice cleaning with some Flitz paste.

The trigger pull is strong, might have to spring for an action job on this, but the SA is nice and crisp.

Plus it was one third the cost of a new .22lr. :neener:

There are lots of quality 22LR revolvers around. You just have to recogzine them for what they are. I will name a few: Colt Official Police-4 or 6"; Colt Trooper-4"; Colt Trooper Mark III-4, 6 or 8"; Colt-Diamondback-4 or 6"; Colt Officers Model Match-6"; Smith K-22 (Model 17); S&W-Model 18; S&W-Model 617. Taurus are ok. All of the other brand names such as H&R and Rossi are lesser priced and function, but they do not approach the quality of the above. There are airweights from Smith available. I have never seen a Smith or Colt that was "worn out". They all shoot well, you just have to get one of them and learn to shoot it well. Higher price, but probably worth it in the long run.

There are also the SP101 Rugers around in 22. There is a long list of single actions available. Good luck in your hunt. Easiest choice is to pick up a S&W 617. Saw one just the other day in a gun shop. All it takes is $.

my gosh

do you people never stop?

enough model 18s ... your driving me nuts .... "found this one sunday" .... "found this at a garage sale" .... "this one followed me home" :banghead:

I CANT FIND ONE!!!!

STOP SHOWING ME YOURS! YOU ARE NOT BEING GRACEFUL WINNERS!

Hammerdown that 18 is simply the prettiest example of the particular model that I have ever seen. I love those grips, what wood is that... cocobolo?

The diamond targets look to be Rosewood, and they do look very nice.

For anyone that realy wants a 18 or 17, there are a bunch of them that hit gunsamerica today. I haven't seen this many in a long time on one classifieds site. These are off limits to us folks in CA but we can still look at them

axeman_g- You are looking too hard. Its when you aren't looking...thats when you will find one. How many more storys do you want?

I was at a gunshow in Livonia Michigan a couple of years ago and this guy comes by carring a box. I ask him if he has any handguns it it. He says yes, 4 of them. One was a nickle Colt Fronteer Scout, mint. I bought it for $200. Then he says he has two more guns in the trunk of his car but the box is big and he doesn't want to bring it in. I go out to the car with him. He opens the trunk and proceeds to unpack the box. First the top piece of cardboard, then two crisp new Colt boxes, more cardboard. Finally gets down to a cherrywood box. Opens it and in it are two unfired Colts...a 6" nickle 357 Python and a 6" nickle 22 Diamondback. I ask how much? He says he would like $1000 for the pair. I couldn't get the money out fast enough.

Couple of months later I went to a gun show in Davison Michigan and a buddy of mine says he has something for me. He show me a mint S&W 48 RR WO TH TT TS 6" with an extra 22 lr cylinder in the box. I ask him how much. He says he was offered $315 but would like $320. Again, couldn't get the money out quick enough. He has called me "slippery" every since. Hey, he set the price.

Then last month a guy comes into the Grand Rapids Michigan gun show with a longarm hardcase full of S&Ws he got from his grandfather. To make a long story short, I got an 18, a 4" 29, and a 4" 57 for $700 total. The 18 and 57 are in 99.9% and the 29 is a four screw made in 1959 and is in 98.5%+ condition (except it has been magnaported). My buddy bought the 17 6" and the 17 8" with a Leupold 2X scope (tapped) for $400 total.

I sold my other 18 (about two weeks ago) after I bought this one because this one is in better condition (but not by much). After buying the 48 above I sold my 6" 17 because the 48 shoots unbelievable with the 22lr cylinder. I also decided to dump my 8" 17 and 8" 48 (w/extra cylinder) because I decided I like shooting the 6" and 4" guns better. I sold them about a year or two ago. I could tell you the storys about how I got these (all similar deals), too, but you've heard enough.

Lots of them out there but not when you are looking. You just have to be there when they show up!;)

PS: I bought another scout, first type, made in 1959 a couple of weeks ago for $75. It is in about 60-70% (needs a barrel reblue otherwise great condition) but it shoots fantastic!! Hits to the point of aim at 40 yards!!! Wasn't looking for this gun either.:D

Hello Axemang & Kurac
I have looked for a model 18 for over 20 years, and not seen any in this shape. The price was not giveaway at 425.00 but then again, the shape is almost like new, and you can not buy anything like this anymore. The grips are a mystery. I have rosewood cokes on my 57 and the wood looks nothing like this and I also have a set of Rosewoods on my nickel 17 and that too looks diferent. I almost think they may be Coco-Bolo due to the choclate appearance of them and the orange stripes as well.. Best regards,
Hammerdown

Years ago I took a H&R 999 22 revolver to a gun smith for general work to improve it... cylinder gap, timing, trigger etc. He refused to work on it and said get a Smith or Colt and I'll work on that. That event changed my hnadgun buying habits.

Axeman; Glad you found something you may be happy with. The H&R's aren't my cup of tea anymore. Graduated a long time ago. Ruger is about the least expensive handgun I will consider. Although, I always keep looking at those tiny little NA Arms revolvers and wonder how they shoot and so forth. Guess I have to say, neer say never.

In my opinion, you will be far happier for general shooting with a 22 revolver if it has either a 4 or 6-inch barrel unless you are thinking of it as a carry gun. That is a totally different use scenario. Keep your eyes open at shops and shows, and you will find that Smith or a nice Colt 22 for a fair price.

ha

22-rimfire,

Ha, sounds to me like your smith had a confidence problem. Anyone can work on a maintstream item, it takes talent and skill to work on something uncommon. (Remington vs Merkel)

And you are right, after owning an shooting a good dozen different 9mm, a few different .357s, a couple different .45s and a bundle of shotguns, I should try to graduate to something better then say a ruger. How about a KelTec? ;)

Could be the gunsmith just felt it was not worth the trouble to tune it and make some improvements. Lots of people like the H&R's, Rossi, High Standards, and some of the lower priced 22 revolvers. I love my High Standard Victor. It shoots great and functions very reliabily with the copper coated rounds. Does not seem to like the straght lead bullets as there are ocasional jams. Same thing happens to my Mark II Ruger, but I can live with a few jams every now and then. Not staking my life on either of those handguns.
