It REALLY depends

just what you plan on using the new revolver for.

If for hunting, then you want a completely different animal than for concealed carry.

If for shooting primarily off a bench, you want something that may be heavier, with a scope.

I just started rebuilding my gun collection (yeah, I know, bad timing) and I just got a Smith model 65. (Stainless, 3" barrel, fixed sights) SWEET!

You couldn't go wrong though with a GP100 4" or 6", or with a Redhawk in .45 Colt. You can shoot them all you want and then pass them on to your grandsons.

A new Ruger or a used S&W (without lock).

I like the 4" and 5" Redhawks in .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. The only reason why I don't have one is that I already have pre-lock Smiths in .45acp and .44 Magnum.

I don't like the looks (underlug) of the GP100, but it's a better gun than S&W's current .357s.

When you look at used guns, the field opens way up. I've got two S&W Model 29 .44 Magnums and two S&W Model 27 .357 Magnums. Eventually, I'll get a used S&W Model 586 or 686 in .357 Magnum, as well as a Model 19 or Model 66 .357 Magnum.

You might also want to look into Dan Wesson. I used to own one in the '80s and it was a great gun.

If you have access to a range that rents guns, go and rent a few of the ones mentioned above. I've shot S&W's and Ruger's for years. Quality is not an issue with either. It all comes down to personal preference. With the locks on new S&W's I'll take the new rugers. The GP-100 3" might be my all time favorite gun.
