Frustration with Utah BCI (fixed)

Gotta rant here. I took my UT resident CHP class on June 20th, BCI's website shows they are now processing resident permits received on Aug 4th. Sounds good, right?

Well not for me, so far.
The date of your cancelled check or credit on your credit card indicates what day we received your permit application.
I used my credit card info, triple-checked it, and sent it in. I haven't seen the charge on my credit card yet. No emails, no letters of explanation as to why I haven't yet been processed or that there was a problem.

Frustration reigns supreme at this point.:banghead:

I really really dislike this Brady Bill censored.

Rant off.

It's too late now, but that's why I use Certified Mail for important stuff like CHL applications, NFA paperwork, etc.

When we sent ours in, we cent priority mail with delivery confirmation so we would know the date on which it arrived, and to make sure it actually ARRIVED. Plus we used money orders, so there would be no confusion or delay in them accepting payment. We received our permits right around the 60 day mark, give or take a week either way (wasn't really counting the days).

I have no complaints, in fact I'm pleased as punch to get it so quickly. Sorry you are having problems, please do call them and check on the status. You never know, maybe your packet got lost in the mail or has fallen down behind somebody's desk. I do know they are pretty slammed there, the permits have become VERY popular and their staff is limited. There are only so many hours in the day, you know, and it's difficult to persuade the average Utah resident why they should pay salaries and benefits and office costs for more staff to service people who don't even live in Utah.

I know they are slammed, and I've waited for several updates on the site beyond the time frame I sent them my stuff. Given time in mail, say, 5 days for the packet to travel maybe 50 or 60 miles, that puts it in their hand on the 26th of June, that's with a LOT of benefit of the doubt. That's still well over a month beyond the recipt date.

I know the BCI is working their tails off processing the applications, I know they are operating at a loss at the cost of processing vs. the cost to me, which I do appreciate, because the state or somewhere else is funding the difference. That was explained by my CHP instructor who is a very big part of the program, and also on the website. He was also a major reason or THE reason residents are being processed at higher priority, I forget which. I appreciate that, too.

I was doing a happy-dance when I seen that the dates had gone into July, hoping that it would be soon when I finally get the permit, then I get antsy wondering when the charge is going to get run through, then I get into neutral while watching the dates change, now I'm into frustration.

I accept that other people are going to get their application processed before mine, not a problem. I accept that non-residents are getting their application processed before mine, not a problem there either. I'm in a line, and I'll get served when the line moves to the point where I am, still not a problem. The problem is according to the information BCI is posting, I've been at the serving point for some time.

Imagine if you were in the doc's crowded waiting room, you've taken your number, and then you wait, and wait, and as you wait, you listen as the numbers they call get closer to yours. You're thinking, "almost there, almost there, anytime now, should be right about now", and then you don't hear your number called, then all the numbers called are after yours. You'll soon start wondering what the deal is. That's where I am.

Call them. I've moved several times since having a permit, and had to renew once. My dealings with BCI have been nothing but good.

Mailed mine July 2nd. My card was charged the next week. I got my permit 2 weeks ago. Something has definitely go awry with your application.

If your card hasn't been charged, they probably didn't get it, but I'd call them to make sure. Be sure to have them check the non-resident stack.

If you have to resubmit everything, at least they are processing them a bit faster now days (around 60-70 days instead of 100+).

So, do you sit there waiting for your number to be called for the rest of the day or do you walk up to the desk and say, "Excuse me, something seems to be amiss..."?

You should to call them and ask what is going on. Their number is 801-965-4445. Currently their website says that the are processing non-resident permits received June 15th. Maybe your packet go dropped in the wrong stack. A 5 minute phone call could be all it takes to have someone dig through there and put it in the right stack. Or, at the very least, they can start looking for it and let you know if the mail gremlins ate it. Either way, you can mostly likely find out whether you need to reapply or if there was any other problem with your application.

It's understandable that you are frustrated and venting here may help you feel a bit better, but all we are able to do commiserate. The people on the other end of the phone number above may not be as sympathetic, but they are the ones who can actually provide you with some information and help reset your expectations. Just call with all the information you gave us and see what they have to say.

Like everybody else here has said, call them.

Normally your check gets cashed, or your card gets charged within a week of them receiving it. It sounds to me like yours got lost somewhere.

BCI is actually a pretty good bunch to work with. Telling us about it won't accomplish anything. Honestly, I've dealt with BCI a lot, and I like them. I'm sure they can just go check and tell you that they probably don't even have your packet at all.

Well, that was easy.

I did call them, everything has been processed, and it's been issued. I should be getting it in the mail this week or next.

I don't normally make easy things difficult, but this was one of my moments. I would have bet money that I put the credit card info on card #1, my most used. Come to find out that I put it on card #3, my least used, which is why I never seen the charge. That's one bet I would have lost.

Thanks for the encouragement to call and the good reports on the BCI's ease to work with. The call answered the questions, and the lady I dealt with was extremely nice, and answered everything completely.

It came in the mail on Friday morning, and I put it to use Friday afternoon/evening, and again today.

I'll tell ya Wes, I sure need to figure something out on that XD-9. I hope to be working weekends soon. Well, not hoping to work, but hoping to get the extra money a weekend job will bring in. Thanks for the update on your mom's permit!

Wore my P89 at 11:00 IWB under my jacket, during the course of the day, I seen about 4 police, ALL 5 of my boss's bosses, my (supportive) boss, co-workers and more public than you can shake a stick at, and no second glances, and I showed my boss after about 3 hours at work with him not noticing.

BTW, this was at a high school, on homecoming game night, and not a single law or policy was bruised. Aren't Utah laws cool? (seeing that we have to have the laws in the first place)

It took them 3 weeks to "receive" mine and I mailed it in Utah so it got there the next day. Also being a Utah resident I was a higher priority than out of state and it still took 118 days to get mine from the day I mailed it.

BTW Utah LOOSES money for every permit they issue so don't complain too much. They are swamped and under funded.

How about renewals?

Have they been taking as long as first time applications?
