The first trip to the range, about every 10th shell was difficult to extract. The second trip, I had to slam the stock on the ground several times to cycle the action. I gave the gun a thorough cleaning, took it out, and it jammed on the second round. I cycled the action, but the extractor tore through the rim of the shell in the process. I tried two different brands of ammo, and ejected 50 unfired rounds without any problems before shooting it. Anyone seen this before? My only guess is that the throat of the barrel is screwed up. Any chance I can ship it to Remington and they'll fix it for free?

I had this situation too when my 870 was new. I just took it apart and cleaned & Lubed it well after each trip to the range. After a couple of range trips, the problems went away.

Were you using cheap bulk pack shells with steel rims? Try using some AA or Rem Premier shells.

I would thoroughly polish the chamber of the barrel as well to smooth out any rough spots that may be there.

Pull the barrel off and run your finger around the inside of the chamber looking for a burr or a rough spot. ALso look at the extractor and ejector from the open end of the receiver and make sure you have them clean and that there is nothing wedged in behind them. If there is not burr and innards look clean, ask a buddy with another 870 for his barrel. dump a few rounds down range and see if his barrel causes your gun to function better. That will help you narrow down which end of the gun to look at.

Hope this works
