Full Auto: Too Much Fun

Oh, I fired them all. Still do. This year I got to shoot SAWs and 240 with the marines, and MP-5s with the 19th group. The only think I wanted to shoot but never got the chance was M-3s. We had them in the weapons locker in Germany for recovery vehicle crewman, but no onw knew the last time they had been fired. They were on the property books for $8 and change. :)

Hi Medalguy,

If you have to fight to keep it on target, you're doing something wrong.

I was allowed to fire a vintage military rifle called a BAR. The weapon 'climbed' so badly that I was very nearly a danger to those behind me as the thing very nearly flipped me backwards. As I recall only one round actually hit the target and the old men in attendance were very amused.

In fairness the weapon was far more rifle than I was physically able to handle but it seemed to me at the time it was foolish to spend 15 rounds to hit the target once when I could do the same with the Lee Enfield with one round.

But we are all granted a God given right to mess up our lives as we see fit. If you can handle the expense and govt animal by-product to own one of the things and it makes you happy- more power to you. Just don't ask me to understand the attraction.

I've been lucky. Since moving to Nevada I have met a great group of shooters. Since then I've fired the M-16, AK47, Uzi, MP5, Sten, Grease Gun, Thompson, Suppressed Sterling, AUG, Galil, 249, M60, MG42, 1919, and a few others.

I have always enjoyed the opportunity to try them out..

Back in 73 my big brothers best friend pat graduated from anappolis and we went down early. we got to shoot all the different guns on the range. Then at the exercise area the pleebs saw a 12 year old on the .50 and started jumping up and waving. the .50 had cork loads and if you stayed down they couldnt hit ya. pat knew i was playing and when about 3/4 of the group was up he told me to eat em. oooooober fun:p pined them to the dirt wall. left nice welts in the center of a purple bruse instantly, some even blead. I wasn't very popular with the newbies but had a place of honor at the dinning hall with the range brass for the whole 2 weeks. Thus honored they took me under their wing and i got to shoot tons uf stuff.

It's been my understanding over the years that the "grease gun" was very inexpensive to produce in the 40's and 50's. It would be interesting to learn from others on THR who may know when they were last issued to tankers. My last exposure to the M3 was in 1961 in Germany.

I respect your opinion on full auto.

I also REALLY envy your chance to fire a piece of firearms history like a vintage BAR. From what I understand the BAR would be a real handful, heavy (which would help taming the recoil) but firing .30-06 cartridges which have a goodly amount of recoil.

I think a Thompson from the same era would have much the same problems but if you get the chance an MP5 or a variant of an M16 might change your mind.

PS If your mind is really set that's fine too, you certainly seem to be a good sport about your experience.

Yeah, I've seen large, grown men firing them from the hip and struggling. Either that or from the shoulder and steadily moving back. There's a youtube video of a rather portly fellow steadily being pushed back while emptying a BAR in full auto. Definitely one of those weapons you need to be ready for when you squeeze the trigger.

I rented a full-auto Tommy gun at an indoor range in Houston several years ago. Let me say, what a pussy-cat that thing is, a heavy one, but still a pussy-cat, like shooting an overgrown BB gun.

My brother lives in Houston and went to a friend's ranch where they put safety harnesses on and stood on the side of a helicopter while they flew around and hunted pigs with full-auto M-16's.

He said he "enjoyed himself".

This is wrong on so many levels. Just when I'm sure I've heard it all something comes up that further shocks my sensitivities. Did they at least dress and eat the pork?
