It's been my understanding over the years that the "grease gun" was very inexpensive to produce in the 40's and 50's. It would be interesting to learn from others on THR who may know when they were last issued to tankers. My last exposure to the M3 was in 1961 in Germany...M3...We had them in the weapons locker in Germany for recovery vehicle crewman, but no onw knew the last time they had been fired. They were on the property books for $8 and change.
I also REALLY envy your chance to fire a piece of firearms history like a vintage BAR. From what I understand the BAR would be a real handful, heavy (which would help taming the recoil) but firing .30-06 cartridges which have a goodly amount of recoil.
My brother lives in Houston and went to a friend's ranch where they put safety harnesses on and stood on the side of a helicopter while they flew around and hunted pigs with full-auto M-16's.
