I'm planning on picking up a fullsized 9mm of some kind this weekend. This will be my first autoloader purchase, and will mostly be for range use/HD, but may be occasionally carried after I get my CCW (December). Also, I'd like to keep my price limit to $500 or less.

I took a trip to Gander Mtn. today, and found that they have FNP 9mm's and SigPro 2022 9mm's on clearance for $449 and $499 respectively. They also have a used HK USP Compact 9mm that could be had for around $575. Any opinions about these three guns, or any guns that I may have missed would be greatly appreciated. Also, I kind of have a soft spot for the XDM's, but don't know how much I want to spend for one.

The 2022 is chunky, but I am really impressed with it so far. I picked mine up a few weeks ago, and I have a few hundred trouble free rounds through it. Great trigger, accurate. I have really big hands, so I did need to buy a larger grip from TopGunSupply. Fits like a glove now.

Finding a concealment holster was more tricky; if that is an issue, I would look to something more mainstream like a G19. I ordered mine from High Noon, and it will be another 6 weeks before I can carry it.

Of your choices I took the FN, I would look at the SIG P250 if you want a polymer SIG. Personally I would not overlook one of the truly great compact pistols a Glock G19. There now I've done it! I love my SIG P229 and have a thing for FN and Glock, in a good way. Magazines and accessories are everywhere for Glock, FN and H&K not so much. SIG are quite common also, but cost more. SIG P250 compact can be had for less than $450.

My hands are on the smaller side, and I found all three guns fit in my grip quite nicely. I've definitely ruled out Glock for now, they just don't fit quit right in my grip. Later on I may consider a sub-compact Glock for a carry option, but not yet.

I will be buying another gun for carry after I get my CCW, but that is a few months away so for now CCW carry is not weighing on this particular decision to heavily.

I was looking online at SigPro 250's and I didn't read too many positive reviews of them..

dang... i got them all and love them all...

the 2022 is fantastic but as stated, thick for CCW... the FNP would probably be my choice.

STAY FAR FAR away from the P250... aaack...

Have you checked out the M&P?

if i threw that and the XD/XDm in the mix, i would pick M&P then the XD followed by the FNP

@Kingofthehill
I've looked at the M&P and XDM, but I think they are both just a little bit more money than I want to spend. Well, the M&P is in the price range but I just don't get excited when I think about that gun for some reason. I do have an M&Pc in mind for a CCW option down the road tho.

One that I hadn't listed is a P99c, with a grip extension. Range gun and CCW all in one.

Browning Hi Power
CZ-75B
HK P7 PSP
Sig P226
HK USP (full size)
Glock 17

I've definitely considered that fact about Gander Mtn., and am actively shopping at a couple of other places too. They just happened to have these two models on clearance for what appears to be a pretty good price.

CZ 75. Absolutely amazing pistol. The only way I'd give up mine is if they made a polished stainless with a decocker.

You'd like the Glock 19 also.

Personally, I don't think any of those are great choices so I didn't vote.

I had an FNP 9, a reliable gun to be sure, but not very accurate IMO. I sold it because I just was not to impressed by the loose tolerances (pinch the frame and slide together towards the end of the barrel and you'll see what I mean.)

No experience with the sig pro, I have shot an HK P2000 9mm and USP9 and just plain didn't like the triggers and mag releases... especially for how much they cost.

For that price range I think you would be better be served by a Glock, XDm, or the excellent M&P series. Unless your decided on DA/SA (which interestingly all of your choices where...) then I would say look for a used P series Sig or CZ-75 ;)

I don't mean to pry, but are you considering those two options because you're on a budget? You don't need to spend a whole lot of money to get something reliable, durable and with defense accuracy.

You can get a NIB Ruger P95 for around $300. If you want something smaller there's the Ruger SR9C. For a little more money than a SR9C you get into a Springfield XD. I've been able to get excellent accuracy with reliable performance out of all of these. You don't need to spend $500 or more for a solid defense tool.

I would reccomend a Glock, but my second choice would be a tie between the H7K, and the Sig, I have shot an H&K 9mil, (not same model) it was smooth and sleek and flawless, I liked the Pro 2022 too, not as much as the H&K though

GetxSome,

If I may make a suggestion as far as Glock is concerned (And yes im a Glock guy :) ). First of all if the grip is your only hangup there are a number of different companies out there that offer grip reduction and stippling jobs for around 50 dollars. Which isn't a really large cost if it makes it fit your hand. Also you may want to check out the Gen4 19's that just came out. The standard grip without any of glocks backstrap inserts is smaller then the old Glock grip. If you were to decide on Glock I cannot stress the benefits of the 19 enough. It has as much capacity as a full size 92 at a far easier to conceal size, and it is not so smal like the sub-compacts where gripping it comfortably for some people become an issue. It is the great middle of the road (if 9mm is your flavor) where if I could only own ONE Glock it would be the 19. (But I'm spoiled and on both a 17 19 and soon a 26 :D ).

Anyway not trying to sway your opinion just offering some suggestions from a happy Glock owner.

Peace

@digsigs226
I do like the idea of DA/SA since this is primarily going to be a range gun. For my future carry gun I will most like go with a DA only such as an M&Pc or XDSC. I love the P-series Sigs, but haven't found one in my price range yet. As for all the CZ 75 fans, I'm not questioning that it's a great gun, it's just not for me.

@Tecolote
I've looked at the SR9c, and I do like it a lot actually, but since I can afford one of the three guns in the poll, and I like them more, I figured I'd go that route.

@watson
Glock makes a fine product, but it's just not what I'm looking for right now, maybe as a carry option down the road tho.

@weldingrod
I would also prefer a P226 or an XDM, but just can't make myself spend the money on one right now when there are several other quality choices for much less money.

If you are not going to carry this pistol and want a DA/SA pistol for range use you may want to look at a used /trade in Beretta 92FS. Great gun, great looking and shooting service pistol. I suggest you try out your choices if possible and a few of ours at a range / gunshop.
I visit a Gander Mnt near my father everytime I go home. I have never walked out with anything, same thing with Sportsmans Warehouse, many visits no purchases.

Of the three, I'd go for the HK USPc. The other two, while competent guns just don't feel right in my hand. The HK is a proven, reliable handgun, easily carried concealed.

BTW; some of my "best buys" have come from Gander Mountain. I've bumped into some incredible firearm deals there in both new and used prices. You never know...
