Well, since I have mentioned many times on this BB how much I like my Glock 17 and Glock 26, I thought it would be good to share a pretty crappy day at the range.
I went shooting this morning with another BB member. After putting up targets and backing up to 15 yards we both started to shoot. Well, after the 1st round, my magazine dropped free of the firearm. Tried again, and again, and again: same thing. Now I am a tad annoyed and thinking that it might be something I did when I buffed-and-fluffed the trigger connector a week ago. Well, the G17 seemed to work with my other 2 magazines, so I wrote it off as a bad magazine. Then, after maybe 40 more rounds out of my other magazines the same thing started to happen with them. That got me a little pissed off, as I would rather have a bad mag than a bad gun. I figured that I should try the G17 mags in my G26 to see if they had the same problem. Well, they worked flawlessly in my G26. Now it was time to break down the G17 and see what is going on. As it turns out, the magazine catch/release is plastic, and a piece had been shaved off or broken off of the top of the part inside the magazine well that holds the magazine in place. So much for shooting the G17 this weekend at my first IDPA event I had planned on going to.
Well, I took John's advice (the other High-Roader I was shooting with, and considering how he shoots his handguns, I'll take pistol advice from him any day of the week!!!) and called a local police supply company to see if they had a Glock Armorer on. They did, I drove over, and less than 10 minutes later I had a new extended magazine release installed. Now I just need to shoot it again before this weekend to make sure it cured the one-shot-eject problem.
I love my G17, and have put somewhere around 15,000 rounds through it with no problems until this, so I cannot complain too much, but I do have to agree with those who say that plastic or polymer isn't always a good thing. I have never heard of a metal magazine catch chipping off and allowing a magazine to eject upon firing.
On the bright side, pending a function check at the range Thursday or Friday, I will get to shoot my G17 this weekend!!!
