Well, since I have mentioned many times on this BB how much I like my Glock 17 and Glock 26, I thought it would be good to share a pretty crappy day at the range.

I went shooting this morning with another BB member. After putting up targets and backing up to 15 yards we both started to shoot. Well, after the 1st round, my magazine dropped free of the firearm. Tried again, and again, and again: same thing. Now I am a tad annoyed and thinking that it might be something I did when I buffed-and-fluffed the trigger connector a week ago. Well, the G17 seemed to work with my other 2 magazines, so I wrote it off as a bad magazine. Then, after maybe 40 more rounds out of my other magazines the same thing started to happen with them. That got me a little pissed off, as I would rather have a bad mag than a bad gun. I figured that I should try the G17 mags in my G26 to see if they had the same problem. Well, they worked flawlessly in my G26. Now it was time to break down the G17 and see what is going on. As it turns out, the magazine catch/release is plastic, and a piece had been shaved off or broken off of the top of the part inside the magazine well that holds the magazine in place. So much for shooting the G17 this weekend at my first IDPA event I had planned on going to. :(

Well, I took John's advice (the other High-Roader I was shooting with, and considering how he shoots his handguns, I'll take pistol advice from him any day of the week!!!) and called a local police supply company to see if they had a Glock Armorer on. They did, I drove over, and less than 10 minutes later I had a new extended magazine release installed. Now I just need to shoot it again before this weekend to make sure it cured the one-shot-eject problem.

I love my G17, and have put somewhere around 15,000 rounds through it with no problems until this, so I cannot complain too much, but I do have to agree with those who say that plastic or polymer isn't always a good thing. I have never heard of a metal magazine catch chipping off and allowing a magazine to eject upon firing.

On the bright side, pending a function check at the range Thursday or Friday, I will get to shoot my G17 this weekend!!! :D

Plastic mags and plastic mag release are two of the real negatives on a Glock.
Just think how much slimmer the Glock grip could be with steel magazines, and durability would go up as well.
Wishfull thinking I guess........

Ah hem... it'd probably feel a bit like a SpringField XD!

Gander Mountain around here has them for $430. Oh, how I wish I had the funds for one because I -really- like the one my buddy just got. Metal magazine, metal magazine release, proper 3-dot sights (not the bucket and dot like a Glock)... angle's a bit more "normal" though I'm used to the Glock feel now. Oh, and the trigger feels a lot less like a squirt gun.

Don't get me wrong -- I like my Glocks -- but this XD thing shows some promise for me.

This is a problem more common when using metal mags for the Glock, like those ultra-crap USA mags.

Also, older Glocks had this problem with older factory mags for various reasons.

I don't think it is a problem with new Glocks using new factory mags.

Sounds like the mag catch ain't catching or the mag catch spring doesn't have enough tension. If the mags are working well in another gun, look elsewhere for the source.

goalie,

Thats what I consider a plus with the Glocks - the ability to drop in a new part and your back up and running in no time. BTW, if the new extended mag release is a little too long (plus those sharp corners!) you can round of the corners and file it down just a tad and make it ever so much more comfortable/useable......sometimes those extended releases can cause a release inside the holster if the gun gets pushed inward a little. Have fun in the IDPA shoot.

Ken

Well, I put a few hundred downrange today with the G17, and the problem was solved with the new part. The Heinie slant pro sights I put on really helped the accuracy as well. :)
