I purchased "2 KCI g19" and "2 KCI g17" magazines not too long ago for my Glock 19. The KCI G19 magazines have fed and fired flawlessly,

BUT when using the KCI G17 mags, I am experiencing multiple stovepipes. (By stovepipe I mean shell casing stuck vertical in the ejection port of the slide.) A simple Tap Rack Bang clears it, but I'd like to know what exactly is causing the stovepipe?

I believe I can rule out limp wristing as I've never had a problem of any sort using Factory G19, G17 and G18 Mags. I also have not experienced any problems using the KCI G19 mags so I can only assume it's something about the KCI G17 mag design.....

I appreciate any info yall can give me.....specifically how exactly a faulty magazine can cause a stovepipe.

If your mag follower/spring are worn or not factory, try using another factory magazine. If the same load cycles without stove piping, it may be the worn mag components or after-market components. You can try replacing the follower/spring with factory and see if they work well.

An aftermarket mag could cause stovepipes for any of several reasons.

* Stronger then standard spring increases upward pressure on the slide & slows it down.

* Feed lips or mag catch location lets it set too high in the grip so the slide drags on it more.

* High mag in the gun allows the rim of the empty case to hit the case mouth of the round in the mag, which knocks it off the extractor hook before it hits the ejector.

With factory Glock mags being a dime a dozen, why waste money on off-brand replacements anyway? It's false economy.

Interesting experience. I recently bought 2 "Asian" G17 mags from CDNN and they have been flawless in my G19. Why did I buy 'em? They were $5.99 each, and included a double mag pouch for $1 (I think it was) if you bought 2 mags. Now it's true that Glock brand mags may not cost like SIG or HK mags, but these were ONE THIRD the cost of Glock mags. And they work.

For those who are tempted, I'll also report that the 33 rounder that I got did NOT work reliably. Unlike the Glock 33 rounder which has been flawless in both my G19 and G26, the Asian model would have 2 or 3 stovepipe jams every mag full. I replaced the (weak, thin wire) spring with a Wolf spring and that got rid of the stovepipes, but the mag will not lock the slide open after the last shot. I expect I will take the Wolf spring back out and pitch the mag

If it only does it with those magazines and not with factory magazines, it has to be the magazines. Glock actually has some of the least expensive replacement factory mags around, often less than $20 new. The price of the aftermarket ones is no bargain if they don't work.

Thanks RC & Wrangler!.........Thats exactly what I wanted to know........I always thought the only thing a faulty mag could do was cause Failure to Feeds. Now I know otherwise.....

And for what it's worth....The KCI mags only see use on the range and if anything they make priceless training aids for practicing the ole Tap Rack & Bang;)
