I've got a Metro Arms 1911 that I'm thinking about trading for a Gen 4 G19 or an M&P 9. I think I like the added capacity of a mid-sized 9. Any thoughts?

Both are excellent guns. The book on the M&P line is that they improved everything that most people don't like about Glocks. In other words, most people prefer the ergos of the M&P line.

Go to the range, and rent both of them. After shooting them, you'll know.

Either or. Pick the one that feels the best in your hand. I like the idea of Glock reliability, but the ergos on the M&P feel much better to me. The Glock has a better stock trigger, again, my perception and I have never had a malfunction in thousands of rounds from either gun. If the prices weren't so obscene, I'd own a P30.

Can't go wrong with either one . personally , I prefer the grip angle on the M&P, but I can't say anything bad about the GLOCK 19 . pick whichever feels better

They are both fine guns. Try both out and see what works best for you. Most ranges would have those to rent.

Myself I like the Glock 19 and have a Gen2. I feel the Glock 19 is about the perfect size while I find the M&P to be too large and the M&P compact to be too small for my purposes.

Have you tried a Walther P99 AS or PPQ?? They both have fantastic ergos and probably one of the best out of the boxes triggers available. They also can usually be purchased under $600. After shooting my Son's Walther P99AS I no longer have any desire to get a P30. The PPQ is relatively new and not in many gun shops yet. Walther is another very high quality German pistol manufacturer.

Glock 19 all the way dude, there just ain't nothing like the real thing! Why settle for a copy or a clone when you can have the original I say!

A) There is NOTHING about the M&P that is settling compared to a Glock. It's simply an alternative. In my experience with both pistols, they are equally good quality.

B) It is not a clone of a Glock. Their designs are completely different. Yes, they are both polymer framed, striker fired pistols. But so are most new handguns that have come out in the last 10 years. That doesn't make it a copy at all.

My preference is the M&P. I find the recoil to be a lot less snappy, it fits my hand much better, points more naturally, and shoots more accurately. At least, for me. Glocks also happen to be good guns. You won't go wrong with either of them. Try them both out and decide for yourself. You also owe it to yourself to look at the Springfield XD line.
Of those big three competitors, the M&P is the only one made in the USA, if that matters to you.

Another vote for a Gen3 G19. I'm looking to pick one up myself when I find a good deal on one.

I like M&P's, and don't think there's anything wrong with one, but IMHO a G19 is one of the best pistols out there. It is very good.

The CDNN magazine I got the other day has walther p99s for $459ish I think. If I had the money I'd jump on that deal.

I love the way the m&p fit in my hand, but the glock 19/23 feel great too. Never shot an m&p though.

Either way you go though its a win win from all the reviews and reports.

The M&P9 has been mine for less than a year and IMO really is a product improved Glock (I'm not referring to the grip angle, I don't have a problem with the Glock angle).

i know you don't hear this often, but i much prefer glock's grip to the m&p's lol

for me, the m&p trigger guard isn't undercut enough, and i had to constantly adjust my grip so the web of my hand was high and tight in the backstrap curve. i also didn't like the undefined, generic feel of the m&p grip.

I would also try both at the range as i did this myself 8 months ago. Both are excellent guns.I went with the glock but wouldnt hesitate to take the m&p.

I have a S&W M&P 9 and a Glock G19.

The G19 just doesn't fit my hand - middle finger is overly compressed by the finger groove and the bottom of the trigger guard. I can adjust my grip by not wrapping as much of my fingers around the grip but it is not naturally feelling.

The M&P has a superior feel. Plus there are enough variants on it to get exactly what you want. Options like external safety or no exterrnal, Magazine disconnect or no Magazine diconnect, etc. The platform of the Smith is just overall better.

My G19 is nice to shoot but I give the edge to the S&W. I like the G19 trigger better though...

If you go G19 - I agree - go Gen 3.

Try them both, see which fits you best and has the best price. Both are competent designs.

I have both M&P's and Glocks, the M&P fits me better and has less perceived recoil with the backstrap that I use. The Glock seems to have a crisper reset, at least from the factory.

For having such a low opinion of conclusions, some people sure threw down enough of 'em.

Was that for the P99 AS?? There are other variations of the P99 but most find the P99 AS as the most desirable one.

Like others have already said, go handle both - and shoot both if possible.

I have had several M&Ps, including the 9mm. While I've never owned a G19, I have shot a few. I like the feel of the M&P over the Glock, but I shoot the G19 more accurately.

G19, more parts such as magazines are readily available an there are more holsters and accessories on the market. S&W seem to have a hard time keeping up with demand on magazines for their guns right now. Overall reliabilty is probably similar between the two.

Ah, it is the quick action for $439. Excuse my lack of attention to detail. I was just skimming when I read. Not sure on the difference. Walthers just caught my interest recently. I've read about the AS only.

P99 QA - Glock like trigger but heavy - around 8LB or more.

P99 AS - Unique striker fired pistol that simulates DA/SA and has a decoker. SA mode is outstanding - better than any factory Glock, M&P by a mile and very short reset. AS (Anti-Stress) mode is after first round is in the chamber and is a long SA type pull similar to HK light LEM but can be easily bypassed. After fring first round P99 AS will them use SA mode until magazine is empty or decocked.

Walther PPQ - Newest Walther based off of P99 that has Glock style trigger but much better trigger and very short reset.

Thanks for the update.
