G19 or M&P 9

I notice no suggestions for Ruger's SR9, which is my current top runner. Comments?

I have a friend with a SR40, and I think it's a great gun. Feels well built, has nice ergonomics, has great sites, and I prefer it's trigger to most other poly/striker fire pistols out there. He paid less than $400 for his gun, and IMO the SR9's/SR40's are the best bang for your buck semi-auto pistols out there right now.

I have not personally fired the gun though, but he says it shoots great with no failures to fire or any other problems so far.

Agreed. In my experience, they can go toe to toe with M&P, Glock, XD, P99, etc... but for $75-125 less.

My preference is the M&P, but that has a lot to do with the fact that I have a lot of experience with mine. If the SR9 had been released back in '06 when I got my M&P9, I may have picked the Ruger instead. I love my M&P though.

I also vote for the M&P. I carry, on and off duty, my M&P 45. Love the gun, the G21 didn't fit my hand well. Though I do enjoy shooting G19s and G17s.

I've heard many stories of LEO qualifying scores going up after their departments switched to M&Ps after years of shooting Glocks. That says something to me.

As a M&P .45 owner and if I needed a new 9mm I would more than likely go with a M&P. But I don't need a new 9mm. My lowly 9VE does a great job so I will stick with my way better than average Sigma. :)

I'm also tossing around the idea of a CZ P-01 or a Beretta 92...thoughts?

Ha, yeah, I didn't want to be one of those guys that starts new threads over and over on much the same topic, that's why I just added it to this one.

I like my M&P9 more than my Glock 19. But they are both great guns. Choose the one you shoot best or just feels/points better in your hand. How the gun handles in your hands is very important. For me the M&P9 handles better because of the grip angle and shape. I also think it comes with better sights, magazine release, slide release, guide rod. The magazines are much easier to take apart.

I do think the glock comes with a better trigger. But you can get used to the m&p trigger or fix it easily (take the grit out, lighten it a bit).

I bought the Gen 3 G19 two days ago and love it. I had bought a Gen 3 G26 about a month ago and have nothing but good to say about it. I also looked long and hard at the m&p 9c but just liked the Glocks better. You rarely hear anything bad about how they work, just comments about the way they feel in the hand etc. You can't go wrong with either gun.

Try them both to see what fits. If you're like me the Glock just won't. Also, as as been suggested, for mid sized polys; don't discount the XD9 (and XD9m), Walther p99, or Ruger SR9.

I recently went with the SR9c, couldn't be happier, but any of the above that feel good to you should be just fine.

I personally would absolutely side with the GEN4 G19. You probably wouldn't have problems with either choice. If you didn't mind a bigger gun, the Walther PPQ is now at the top of my list of must haves. It has an amazing trigger pull and ergonomics but is a bit more expensive.

The newer XDM 9mm Comp comes with a 5.25" barrel and 20 round if you don't mind the extra size. I would consider sprinfield as well.

I have shot the Glock and have owned the M&P. I loved my M&P because it fit my hand better and the ergonomics were much better.

That being said if you are looking for a full size 9mm you might throw in the Ruger P95. It is almost half the price of either of the other pistols and it is rugged, durable, and accurate for the price. But it is little more bulky.

It is all relative depending on what you are wanting the gun for. Of all the guns you have mentioned so far: the glock, the M&P, the Beretta, and the CZ are all full size pistols. 2 have hammers and safeties and 2 don't. Just thought I would give you another option.

Based on the four guns you have listed, here is the order I wouls pick them in.

Beretta 92
S&W M&P 9
Glock 19

and since I'm completely unfamiliar with the CZ, it ranks last. Put one in my hands, we may have a different story.

^ I'm sure it would. CZ ergonomics are very hard to beat, and IMHO are quite a bit better than any of the other guns he mentioned.

CZ's feel great in most peoples hands.

I own an M&P. Have shot an SR9 (and a Glock). IMHO the SR9 is a fine pistol. Trigger was good, 100% reliable, and fairly accurate. If they made one with a 5" barrel and no thumb or mag safety I'd likely own one of those instead of my M&P 9L.

I vote for the glock. I own several myself, but the only gen 4 I have is a 27. Can't really speak to the gen 4 compacts, but I have a few buddies that use them and have no problems. As for the new recoil springs they are shipping out: definitely doesn't make them look too hot, but I haven't seen many gen 4s produce failures.

If the glock fits you well and you like the grip angle, you really can't go wrong.

I shoot both a Glock-17 and S&W M&P9Pro in competition. I have always preferred the ergonomics and triger of the S&W99 and current S&W M&P over the Glocks. However much personnal preference is involved in that decision.

Above all stay away from the generation 4 Glock 19. Two fellow shooters were having ejection problems with newly purchased Gen 4 Glock-19's.

Very wrong, the Glocks (mine included) are having major issues. Mainly the 9mm's. They are having failure to eject(stovepipes), and erratic ejections(to the face) along with other issue(gen 4 as well as gen 3). Maybe if you got your hands on a "pre 2008" model you might be in good shape. Mine is nothing but issue after issue, it is a g19 gen 3 test fire date 6-3-11. Go with the m&p and you will receive perfection. My 2 cents...

I had ejections to the face for a while and then I realized it was my grip not my gun.

To rathernotsay: its not my grip, its the gun. It is a known fact that most if the newer production Glocks have extractors that are "out of spec". When I called Glock to see what they had to say, they told me that if I replace the extractor with another OEM, the extractor maybe "in spec", and they can't tell me to get aftermarket parts but he did say if the problems persist, try another extractor. Just go on GlockTalk and see for yourself. It's in the models made durring and after 2008(when they changed the extractor from cast to MIM). I have a feeling your maybe made before then. Look at your extractor, if it is a straight edge on the top, you have the "old" extractor, that is in spec. If it has a little dip on the top, it is the "new" MIM extractor, and has the possibility of being very out of spec. Just figured I would fill you in brother. smitty704
