Victims foil robbery attempt

Targets of home invasion disarm, restrain robbers

By Greg Rickabaugh | Staff Writer

Two gun-toting teenagers were attacked and disarmed by the gutsy targets of a home invasion who refused to be victims, a Richmond County sheriff's official said Thursday.

The home invasion occurred at 11 p.m. Wednesday on Raymond Avenue, off Wrightsboro Road near Daniel Field.

The victims struggled with the robbers, stripped away their weapons and beat them as they pleaded, "Let us go. We're poor," according to Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Scott Peebles.

Investigators are still searching for the robbers, who fled the house unarmed.

Sgt. Peebles said he does not usually recommend fighting with anyone who has a gun.

"I think it was risky, but obviously effective," he said.

The sergeant gave the following account of the failed home invasion:

Christina Watson and Melanie Sternberg had four guests at their home when two teens approached their porch, showed a rifle and a handgun and ordered them all inside.

In the kitchen, the robbers demanded their cell phones.

That's when guest Jason Lamberth, 22, began struggling with the handgun-toting robber.

Then Lawson Landrum, 19, smacked the man in the back with a shovel and disarmed him.

Elliot Rose, 22, took on the man with the rifle, grabbing the weapon with one hand and punching him in the face with the other.

Garrett Jones, 20, jumped in and tried to take the rifle, which eventually broke. The men then hit the robber in the face and groin.

That's when the two teens began yelling at the group to let them go. "Stop hitting me. I'm poor," the robber was quoted by the victims as saying.

Sgt. Peebles said the handgun was not loaded and the invaders got away with the portion of the rifle that carries ammunition. He said the men who fought the robbers were lucky.

"They knew what their abilities were and felt confident they could defend themselves," Sgt. Peebles said.

Good for them!
I hope those "poor" deliquents learn there lesson and go find a job to keep them out of trouble.

IF that happened more often two things would happen.

1. There would be less poeple willing to risk putting there life on the line to try to rob someone for a few bucks.

2. The one that are willing to do so would be the crazy/dangerous type.

Can you imagine the conversation back at the hideout/street corner/ clubhouse after that??

Thug Buddy: "Hey guys, how'd the home invasion go?... OMG! Are you ok, what happened to your FACE???"

Home Invaders: "Well...ummmm...uh... we had our guns taken away from us and got beat down with them. ow..."

Thug Buddy: "BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! (Falls on floor crying because he is laughing so hard)..... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! (This goes on for awhile...you get the picture)... "

I imagine that Homie 1 & 2 will forever be known for getting totally pwn3d by their "victims."

THR is filled with victims fighting back this week - AWESOME! I sincerely wish that spirit would spread like wildfire.

Oh man. That gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Especially the guy getting hit with the shovel.

Oh boohoo. Lots of people are poor, they don't break into people's homes with guns.

I've been led to believe that you shouldn't defend yourself with a shovel because -- statistically speaking -- you're liable to have it taken away and used against you.

Who knew?

Using an empty gun in a robbery is about as dumb as it gets. I guess they were so poor they didn't think the victim might have his/her own LOADED weapon?

Geez, brainpower like that is simply amazing (that it keeps them breathing at all).

I love living in Georgia. Funny thing is, that sort of response is kind of matter-of-fact around here.

Fact #1: Everybody around here has a gun, and we're used to them. therefore...

Fact #2: Intimidation by firearm doesn't impress most folks.

This isn't some fancy Blue state, where somebody can just point a gun held sideways and make folks wet their pants on cue :)

Eric F,

I'm impressed not just by the response of the "victims", but by the attitudes of the police officers and even the writer of the article. Wow.

"Poor"? I'll bet he has a wealth of aches and pains. :D
