I friend called me this morning and asked me which reloading powder he should use for his new 5.56 M4 using 50-60 grain projectiles. Well, it has been years since I reloaded that round and even then it was for a bolt gun. So, he will be reloading his own for training and target purposes in his new gas-gun AR M4. Question: of the new generation of powders now available for reloading, which ones would you choose? What say you? Thanks...

H335, AA2230, CFE223, Varget, BLC2, AA2200, Benchmark. I have used all listed with good success. I prefer H335, or AA2230, but all will work.

The 223 (5.56 NATO) is one of those cartridges that can be loaded with a pretty wide selection of powders bringing Ten Driver's statement "Whatever I could find" or MEHavey's statement "Literally any medium burn rate rifle powder" full circle.

I like BL-C(2), H335 and Vihta N133 but there are a dozen others that will work fine for the bullet weight range you mention.

Like other powders mentioned, if you can find it, IMR 8208 XBR worked well in the DI and piston AR-15s that I lost in the terrible boating accident.

i've had to get creative to find suitable .223 powder. i've found that IMR 4320 does a decent job. i had never even heard of it before the current shortage set in.
