ok well I was wondering if a regular foid card will be enought to purchase a colt ar 15?

or do I need a class 3??
If so how would I go about getting a class 3?
because If I wanted to get a foid I could go to a local gun shop and sign up
but im not to sure about the class 3 :(

thanks guys..

Illinois, especially Chicago, has many crazy laws. http://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/ordinances/chicago.pdf

Know the law, and what you are/are not permitted to do/own.

If you were able to own a class-3 license, this pertains, by and large,
to fully automatic weapons, which cost $$$$'S. An AR-15 is not
necessarily fully auto.

But, this only matters if your state and local laws don't prohibit
certain firearms...

If you're in Illinois (which is one of the few places that requires a FOID), you will not be doing Class 3.

Otherwise, in Illiniois, a semi-auto AR or clone is perfectly legal anywhere outside the paved over North East corner.

SOund slike your in IL. Anyhow, might as well get your FOID anyways. As for the AR, after you get a FOID, you can have one. THe AR is not NFA, so no worries there. However, if you do get hte NFA bug, you're screwed. Only AOW available unless you become $OT.

Oh, congradulations you have or will fall into the anti-gun crowd by complying with it.:)

He's got to be in Illinois if heis talking about getting an FOID and being able to submit through the gunshop, because from what I understand that is the way it is done out there.

Just looked at his previous posts and he lives in Crook (Cooke County) IL, specifically Mayor Daley's Kommie Paradise complete with CAGE Squad, where owning assault weapons is illegal.

Joey, he's not becoming an anti. He just wants to keep his rectum its current diameter.

In Illinois you cannot even touch a firearm in a gun store without a FOID.

For the original poster, if he is in most parts of IL he can get a semiauto AR15 if he has a FOID. If he lives in Chicago or some of the surrounding communities, many of them have bans on so-called "assault weapons" and that would include an AR15.

No. Any place that does licenses can do it. As long as there's a notary somewhere to notarize it. I've done it at a gun show. I've done it at "Mary's Fast License Service". Gunshops will often have the forms, as will police stations, etc.

(oop. sorry. I misread you to mean that it had to go through a gunshop.)

or New Jersey, they require a FOID too.

In NJ, it's a FID, firearms ID card.

One of the few advantages have over Illinoisans and other states with FIDs/FOIDS/etc is that the FID is good until you're dead, disqualified, or your address changes.

Illinois FOID is good for 5 years, then you gotta send some more money to the state. Bunch of bull. :fire:
You can't even buy ammo without a FOID let alone touch a firearm.
There's a link on illinoiscarry.com about what Illinois municipalities have restrictions on ownership, etc.

+1. If you live in a state with gun control laws so strict as to require a FOID I would almost guarantee the state wouldn’t allow you to have a class 3 weapon.

But to answer your question. No you don't need a class 3 stamp to own a semi-auto AR15. Class 3 stamps are required for selective fire (e.g. Full auto) weapons, short barreled rifles, suppressors, and AOWs (any other weapons).

You can't buy guns or ammo without a Firearms Owners ID card.

You can buy ammo without a FOID, if you're not an Illinois resident. How screwed up is that?

They actually made Class 3 illegal quite a bit later than the FOID was instituted. Mid-1980s, I think.

F.O.I.D.

Just wanted to share a funny story about FOID cards.

I was born and raised in The Peoples Republic of Illinois where I always kept my FOID card current. A couple of years ago I moved to Indiana (a free state just east of P.R.of I.).

The State of Illinois sent me a renual form for my FOID which was forwarded to my new Indiana address. It arrived on the same day as my new Indiana Permit to Carry a Handgun.

Life is full of beautiful ironies.:)

Illinois FOID cards have been around as far as I know since the early 70,s. I had one when I was 15 years old and was able to buy rifle ammo with it. It cost $5 back then also and was good for 5 years.

You can have an AR 15 in Illinois with just a FOID card. My brother owned one in Kane county and Kendal county with just a FOID card. Cook county is a whole different story from the rest of Illinois.

"Illinois FOID cards have been around as far as I know since the early 70,s."

1968.
Cost has always been $5 for 5 yrs. $3 goes to Conservation. $2 goes to administering the program. For further trivia, actual cost to administer the card is about $7/card now.

Based on an earlier post, it looks like you're in Chicago like me. AR-15s are illegal here, as is the sale of spray paint...but I digress.

You are very limited in terms of the long arms (rifles and shotguns) you can own here. No handguns allowed, unless you're an LEO (law enforcement officer) or a City Alderman.

No magazine capacities over 12. No shotgun barrels under 18" or rifle barrels under 16". No pistol caliber carbines with the magazine well in the grip. In the semi-auto, could-potentially-be-considered-an-"assault weapon" category, you're pretty much left with a Mini-14...but no 20 or 30 round magazines. You can theoretically have an SKS, I believe, but it can't have a bayonet lug or flash suppressor or extended magazines. AR-15s are out.

Check out this site for more specifics--Chicago ordinances. You really have to hunt for info. The City of Chicago website has nothing and the Gun Registration Office is criminally slow and not particularly helpful in helping identify what's legal and what isn't. A search for "gun registration" on the City's site will net you nothing, though registration is required. It's b.s. (balogna sandwich), I tell you.

Do get your FOID card, though. Takes about a month to get it back and is a veritable bargain compared to Chicago's gun registration fees.
