What we need HERE...

Kayak-Man--Now you do realize, I hope, that what we on this forum will be needing from you, post-Appleseed, is an after-action report, with pictures if you can manage those as well.

Good luck! Enjoy! :)

will do!

I plan to go to my first appleseed this spring. I'm not expecting it to be more than a bit of research or a decent highpower friend can provide, but it should be a good time none the less. I'll certainly report back on if any surprising tips/tricks pop up.

I'll be going to my first Appleseed event next month. A friend of mine attended one last year and scored his patch. He said the folks attending ran the gamut from ex-military special ops guys to a woman who never shot before. All wanted to learn/hone their rifle skills. I have an old 10/22 with a fixed 4X scope that is very reliable but on the Appleseed site they recommend bringing a back up rifle in case of problems.

I decided to purchase another 10/22 carbine and am rigging what Appleseed calls "The Liberty Training Rifle." Its a 10/22 with tech sights and a 1.25" military style sling. Just got everything and plan to rig it up tomorrow or Saturday. Looking forward to going to this.

My biggest issue was when old Fred kicked the MG'ers and 50cal shooters off the range. Fred was then voted off the board for the Gun Club but he and his cronies were still on the board of the "landowners". SO he had a secret meeting and raised the rent on the club a bunch and attempted to forced the club of the land. He then called another "secret" meeting and voted himself back in as President of the gun club. The legit Board threw him out so he evicted the club and started up RWVA. Of course he kept the club property...ammo...guns pop up target machines that everyone has been using for the past 7 years etc....

There is still a lawsuit going on over the whole issue last I heard....
You know what they say about rumors and assuming...
Appleseed is far larger than Fred. Fred is but one man and Appleseed is nation wide. There is no doubt that Appleseed is Fred's creation and he makes sure that shoots are standardized but you will likely not ever meet him so you may love or hate him but you will enjoy an Appleseed shoot. Going by heresay is a weak excuse to not attend an Appleseed. Come check out a shoot. You will not be disappointed.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Appleseed Project Marksmanship Clinics, and I would really like to attend one. I would like to qualify if I can, but my priority is the skill, not so much the badge that says I can shoot well.

My understanding is that its a 2 day course, and people usually shoot thier .22 the first day, and then a centerfire the second, so first, if thats not right, please correct me.

Right now I have 3 rifles: A savage 111 30-06, a Saiga AK in 7.62x39, and an old Remington SportKing .22. The Remington has a sling, but its old and I don't know if its long enough (I've never utilized a sling to increase acuracy). Also, it doesn't really have sights. It has a scope on a side mounted bracket so I can still use the non-existant iron sights, which are two screws in the barrel, about an inch apart, at the end. The rifle has had some reliability issues, but I think those were due to it not being cleaned and lubed often enough.

My question is, how much of a benefit would I get out of the AK and old .22? Would I really be getting the most out of the course? Or should I wait until I can afford a better .22 and my shoulder has healed enough that I can shoot the Savage?

Thanks,

Chris "the Kayak-Man" Johnson
Most shooters stick to .22s both days. We have taken everyone to 100yds on the second day with their .22s on occasion... I have found $80 10/22s at pawn shops. Even if you spend $200 on a brand new 10/22, it is still cheaper than feeding your Saiga for 2 days.

What "rumor and assumption"??

Have fun at an Appleseed, I won't be going..don't need it....I made Rifleman 10 years before he started Appleseed...

It's a good thing you likely won't meet Jack...don't let him go near the targets to be scored as he usually keeps a ".30caliber pencil" in his pocket for making sure bullet holes touch the next higher scoring ring... lol

You obviously do not know any first hand hard facts about the dispute in Ramseur
.30 cal rule is only used for 25M. We have taken .22s out to 100yds and the .30 cal rule did not apply. Being an Appleseed instructor, I have met Jack personally. I spent 2 days just listening to him talk about the program and how we can improve it as instructors. It was advanced Instructor training.
Your are right. If you do not want to shoot better than you shoot now then you absolutely do not "need" an Appleseed shoot. However, I would bet money that your score would improve from start to end of day 1 and even more by end of day 2. I am not just talking the Appleseed AQT.

The stuff is out there on the net - Google will help.

Bingo.

Unless you compete at Camp Perry every year, you will learn something and you will improve your shooting skills.
Though a lot of people can be helped by AS, this statement is a bit too broad to be accurate.

My point is that unless you are already a world class High Power (the discipline that translates most directly) shooter, you will learn something from an Appleseed and improve your shooting skills. It's not just for beginners, although I think beginning to intermediate shooters will get the most out of it. Unlike yourself, I have made a huge investment of time and money into a lifetime of shooting and found the clinic to be very informative. Both times. Thank you for your critique of my wording though, I understand it is your specialty.

And you do? You were a member of the gun club he kicked off the property when he was voted off the clubs board? Apparently you have some first hand hard facts?

I think you missed the point....Jack has been known to "score" his own targets with the "pencil" and I don't mean always in the AQT.

2 days? Hmm...think I have you beat on that one......

Again you missed my point..I'm ALREADY a rifleman..earned back in '96 or so long before Appleseed was started....
and yes anyones score would improve after two days of shooting....me included...it's called practice...but I'd already be starting of day 1 well ahead of the game.

Not at Appleseed "I" won't....I can improve my skills by sitting in the den and snapping in for an hour or two....

How do you know? Because you qualified 15yrs ago??? Try it and see. I'm afraid you'll need to take a teachable attitude with you. So you'll have to leave the ego at home.

why do appleseed threads always end like this? come on people
