Getting thru Iowa...

I just found out that I will be driving to the Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN tommorrow(4-15). I will be travelling through Iowa and it appears that they do not honor any of my CCW licenses(Kansas, Texas, NewHampshire). It also appears that car/open carry is not feasible as well. Anyone with with experience in navigating this un-visitor friendly state? Any legal way to avoid the locked box thru Iowa? Your thoughts appreciated.

Iowa:Handguns may not be carried in a loaded or accessible condition;rifles and shotguns must be unloaded and cased yet may be accesible to passengers.Handguns must be contained inside a closed or fastened container which is too large to conceal on ones person.

And you can also use FOPA for handguns or long guns

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

I had to travel across Iowa recently. Did the locked box thing. Also did not stop anywhere in Iowa and did not spend any money there. Figured that with their laws they really did not want any of my business.

And I don't like the travel requirements either. Believe it or not, the agency that nabs the most on gun charges is DNR (people hunting from the road or in their trucks).

I would recommend that you have no loaded magazines next to the gun or visible in the trunk. They have charged people for illiegal transporting as they can say the two together is a loaded weapon.

That is why our permit to carry legislation is trying to get updated and standardized so that other states with give us reciprocity among other things...

Well there's your problem! Just get Mayo 1 to fly you to Saint Mary's and you won't have to worry about a Iowan cop pulling you over!
(and if you had driven during the 13th you'd probably have gotten off since every cop along I-35 was in Ames for Veishea Weekend arresting drunk people)

You are not kidding about VEISHEA Weekend. It has been a few years since I have been to one, but the last time I went there appeared to be almost 1 cop per 5 people...and there were over 20000 people there! You couldn't spit on the sidewalk without getting a lecture from a PO.

So I concur...that is a great time to drive through iowa...

While you are at it email the State involved Chamber of Commerce and advise them of your plans-that should include:

No stops for gas

No stops for food

and for sure NO stopping for lodging.

Tell them that-the state C of C and several larger city C of Cs that you will be passing thru. Ask them to tell the legislators to 'get on the CCW stick' and no stopping till they do..

What about Illinois?

In this same line of thought, has anyone here had to travel through Illinois while transporting a firearm? Is their a legal way for a non-resident of Illinois to travel through the state with a firearm in a vehicle?
