Girlfriend suddenly wants CWP....for coyotes?

IMHO, it's not the caliber so much it's what fits her hands and what she can shoot well. I don't know what you have for gun ranges around you, but if you can, find one that let's you "rent" handguns and see what she's good at shooting.

Two good rounds in any 'yote will do the job...

For a girl FN's Five Seven pistol in 5.7x28mm should do the trick.
Little to no recoil, 20 rounds mag, very acurate, powerful enough to shoot a coyote dead and is quite a light pistol.

My wife was always a revolver girl because she liked the simplicity of it, well one day I got her to pick up the Glock 17, 19, and 26 to see which fit her hand the best...she said she didn't like any of them but the 19 fit the best...went to the range and I let her start off with her revolver (.38 snub) and she did good, then I put the G19 in her hand (she was still complaining about it) and let her shoot it - Wow, she said, hitting the bullseye....a few more shots and now I can't take it away from her! .... my 4'11 daughter has a S&W 4 inch model 10 .38 special for her home protection firearm ... all this to say that either of those style handguns are easy to learn and manipulate and should do the job nicely ...

What about a revolver chambered in .17 hmr? At pistol ranges it should do for coyote.

She needs a 9mm. It will kill a coyote - no Problem. And, the ballistics are better than a .38 special.

There are a lot of guns to choose from, but have her take the CCW classs first. She'll make a better choice afterwards.

I personally think a Glock 19 would be a great choice for her.

Depending on where you live in the country coyotes will weigh any where from 25 pounds for a small one all the way up to 50 for what I would call a monster coyote. I have killed one with a ruger single six 22lr but it was luck i think. I have shot a few with a 22lr rifle and even with a good broadside shot it takes a few min for them to die and I don't stop shooting till they fall over.
That FN 5.7 actuly looks like a good way to go but I have never personaly shot one. I have herad that they are light in recoil

I have an oposing opinion on the .22LR

In a "hunting" situation, where you are concealed, have time to pick and place your shot, at a close enough range, then yeah, maybe a .22 LR is enough.

As already stated in this thread, you're generally not going to have to worry about defending yourself from a healthy animal. Read about the attack on a young girl waiting on the school bus here in SC week before last. It changed my mind on slipping a .22 in my pocket for 4-legged critters on my evening walks.....

Choices, choices...

There's a question about how to protect the ears if pulling out the pistol on the spur of the moment? The .22 options are many, around here the Ruger Mk III and Browning Buckmarks are used in weekly competition, and could take a Ki-Yote? The 38 with hollow points has coyote stopping power, and the 357 would be a lot of recoil for small hands...

I second what Big Bill says, get her a Kahr CW9, or a PM9.
Both are easy to carry, and not to complicated to shoot.
A good first all around weapon for a beginner.

Woman vs Pistol

Whatever you two decide upon, make sure she can easily operate the slide. My wife enjoys shooting most of my pistols and revolvers, but she is tiny and some of my semi-auto pistols she cannot pull back the slide. For instance she cannot operate my SIG P226 but can easily use my Glock G17. As always let us know what you decide and please post PICTURES!

Are you sure its rabid ? Our local vet says more likely K9 distemper is the cause of coyotes acting sluggish or disoriented. I would bet the revolver would be the way to go for the in-experienced shooter. You never know when the day will come when you need her to back you up against 2 legged dogs, the way society is going. If this is the case, Glock 19.

Find a buddy with lots of guns (there are plenty of us out here), take her to the range, and shoot to her heart's delight. Rent the guns you don't own. My experience is been that they will ALWAYS gravitate to a specific gun. WHatever that is - that's the gun for her!!

How about a Marlin 60 loaded with Velocitors? It's light, cheap and very easy to master. Everybody likes shooting my 60s, whether they're a newbie or not.

Why not an AR? Nothin like 40 rounds of .223 to stop a rabid pack of coyotes recoil is little.

handgun: 9mm should work, .357mag would be great as well, she can shoot soft .38 specials or full house .357mag loads. a double stack 9mm high cap would give her a little leeway, but practice is important too....and for coyote, alternate FMJ and JHP. sometimes, penetration is good...

Well the horses aren't worried about the coyotes. If they pay any attention to them, it will be to run them off.

What got my wife's attention was when the coyote was looking in the sliding glass door at the "dog treats" on the inside..... So.... we tuned her up with the .22 rifle we kept in the closet and put a Browning Buckmark in the barn and she popped 5 of them.

If it's really coyotes she is worried about, a .22 is fine. It is also a great way to start teaching someone to shoot a pistol.

I can't get over how may guys I see buying a full size 1911 for "my wife, girlfriend, etc" and then cannot understand why she doesn't like to shoot it. Get her out and let her shoot a bunch of stuff and then let her pick. She has to buy into whatever you get.
