Hey guys, I've been wanting to pick up some kind of long range "toy" or "novelty" gun to play around with and to add to my collection. I'm not looking for practical. I'm looking at something along the lines of an Armalite AR-30 in 300 mag or maybe even the AR-50. What kind of suggestions do you have for this sort of thing? I'd like to keep it in the $3000 range (not including optics). Anybody played with some of these toys? What's your preference/opinion?

I have an AR-50 and a State Arms Shorty, both in 50BMG, and thoroughly enjoy shooting both. In doing so, I also learned new reloading techniques which I can apply to lesser calibers. You will definitely enjoy these "novelty" guns, BUT I sincerely ask you to join the FCSA (Fifty Caliber Shooters Association) and join the FCSA Members Forum, where we discuss anything 50BMG related. For the information you will learn, it will be the best money spent. Feel free to contact me by PM - I may be selling one of mine soon due to medical bills - cash flow shortage right now. I can also set you up with everything you may desire for reloading equipment and components. Otherwise, we have members in NC that I can put you in contact with, if you desire to try one before buying.

Something in the .300 Win Mag range is solidly in the long-range rifle category, not really novelty. Define your parameters a little better and the answer will become obvious. If you want a novelty (ie without much use), go for the AR-50. If you want to shoot at long range and hit stuff and become effective, get something that people use for that application..

Ya want a novelty gun for around $3000?
No question.... Ya need to take a trip to Red Jacket.

A silenced grenade launcher?
Repairing a 57mm cannon and hand loading shells?
A .410 that fires an arrow?
An Ak47 sniper rifle?

That place SCREAMS expensive novelty!
:D

Stupid question time!

What's PSL stand for? I went to Lapua's page but couln't find it

Remington Rolling Block in .45-70? Probably not what you had in mind, though.

A Sako TRG 42 might be closer to what you might be looking for. Chambered in .338 Lapua, it should reach right out there.

At 3K you are close to a Barrett M99 kit from buds online. Ive personally owned an AR-50 and while it was awesome it was just too heavy and a barrett is more fieldable. When I get back into the big 50 ill be buying the M99.

Probably not as outlandish as you are wanting, but: this action http://montanarifleco.com/Long actions.html in this T5 stock http://mannerstocks.com/tactical/ with a Shilen .338 barrel blank chambered in .338 lazzeroni, with a holland brake and nightforce scope would be an incredible longrange performer. If you do decide on something like this try this guy http://www.parrycustomgun.com/index.php?id=home 580-995-4867 I have heard many good things about his work in the custom rifle department. Heck, he could probably give you a better suggestion on a rifle than I did.

Go have a surgeon 6.5x47 built buy a good smith with a manners or McMillan stock and a good barrel that would be novel. And you get to actually hit that long range stuff..

I saw some FN Semi auto Winchesters on sale. They were .300 Win mag and sold for $599.00.

Savage has their new long range gun chambered in 6.5 Creedmore. The review in the magazine said that it was the most accurate rifle the editors had ever shot, bar none. And it was shooting factory ammo out of a 1000$ factory gun.
