I recently bought a Savage FCP-K and now that its wearing its Millet TRS-1 its all ready to go except one detail, a SLING! I was trained to shoot in the Marine Corps and while most people neglect the pure utility of a sling on a rifle I really want a good one for mine. I'm not just looking for a sling so I can throw it over my shoulder, I'm talking about a versatile and tough sling that can also convert easily to use as an arm loop for steady shooting. I have a bipod and rests but really I would rather just get down in the prone position with a good sling for long range shooting. I don't shoot competition and I'm not really planning to I just like honing my shooting skills. Let me know what you guys recommend.

I"m not that picky about leather or synthetic I'm more interested in a well designed sling regardless of its construction.

i think the 'quick cuff' type slings are popular these days, but i still use the old 1907 style slings. turner is a popular mfg of these in leather and synthetic, but you can get much stiffer, better ones if you look around a bit

Stiffer is better? What qualities do you think are best Taliv?

Who makes the Quick cuff sling? That looks interesting.

Another board recommended the Turner AWS. Any input on that one?

I use the competition sling shown, for service rifle competitions, but the quick-cuff would be easier to get into and out of. Match rifle allows that, but not service. If you're into the last tiny bit of advantage, there's the synthetic ones that theoretically absorb pulse. It's amazing how you can the see the target flinch as much as a MOA or better with your pulse. Can't really see it with iron sights, but with a scope, wow.

thicker and stiffer leather is definitely better for service rifle / position shooting / matches.

good slings just make me happy.

i own 2 of the biothane / AWS whatever synthetic turner slings. afaik, they exist because of complaints that a) leather stretches over time and when wet (it rains on matches, you know) and b) the leather slings suffer from keepers that slip which changes your position, which isn't good.

so turner made a sling that wouldn't slip. (the synthetic has a slightly 'tacky' feel) of course, there's so much friction with it, i could never manage to get in and out of them in the 3 min prep time w/o assistance. so i don't use them in matches. they hang out on varmint rifles, and i'm giving one to hso.

if one is supposedly pulse absorbing, that's news to me.

i haven't tried the ching sling.

really good slings are like, $35-$50. that is, they're cheap enough to buy a couple and see which one you like best.

as with nearly all advice in rifle country, it really depends on what you intend to DO with the rifle that drives which sling is best. e.g. 1907 style is probably the worst possible sling you could use if you're planning on shooting timed matches like 3gun, but it's the best for bullseye style, like high power.

It really depends on use and preference. I prefer simple, nylon slings for ease of use and weight, but you may need something different.

If you want a shooting sling (and you say you do), then that narrows down the field tremendously. A lot of the shooting slings out there aren't much besides carry slings. They won't provide the shooting support that you need. The Turner sling was a good recommendation. Basically any GI web sling or M1907 sling is what you're looking for.

I quite like my VTAC 2 point sling...you can synch it up for shooting and let it out again very easily.

Ooooooh!! Lots of good suggestions!! I'm surprised now positive the response is. It seems slings are popular with the tactical crowd and their ARs but I hadn't heard much otherwise and my searches were pretty fruitless. I like the concept of the ching sling. I have to look at my rifle to see where the third swivel would go.

Does the quick cuff have a full sling and a seperat cuff? If seems you use the cuff for your arm then detach the rear of the sling and attach it to the cuff. Is that about right?

I have two of these Ching slings and think they are great. Fast to get in or out of and Andy Langlois is a great guy to buy from. First class stuff. :D
+1 for the Ching sling. I've had Andy make custom stuff for me in the past (not slings). He's a great gun. Galco makes a Ching Sling II (or something like that - could be called a CW sling). It's very simple but lets you quickly sling up. I'd be inclined to order from Andy.

I would also consider the inexpensive USGI nylon sling.

I should have just checked what the Marines are using. It seems they used the M1907 sling until recently when they switched to the Quick Cuff 2. If its good enough for them it's good enough for me. I'm going to buy both and see which one suits me better. Thanks for the input folks!!
